'First Light' at Keck

The W. M. Keck Observatory on the Big Island will marks its 10th anniversary of "first light" with an open house at its Kamuela headquarters on April 14.

There will be hands-on demonstrations, science presentations, displays and refreshments from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The anniversary celebrates the day in 1992 on which the Keck I telescope was first trained on the heavens.

The Keck I is the world's most powerful tool for exploring the Universe.

The W.M. Keck Observatory was built and is operated by the California Association for Research in Astronomy, a partnership between the California Institute of Technology, the University of California, and NASA.

The bulk of construction costs came from a $70-million grant from the Los Angeles-based W.M. Keck Foundation, which also provided funding for the Keck II telescope. Science observations on Keck I began in May 1993, after installation of scientific instruments and final testing.

For more information about the W.M. Keck Observatory, visit the Web site at http://www2.keck.hawaii.edu:3636/ or send e-mail to: lkraft@keck.hawaii.edu

Open-house admission is free. The observatory headquarters is at 65-1120 Mamalahoa Highway. Call (808) 885-7887.
