Hegedus helps BYUH to sweep

Adrienn Hegedus stepped up to the No. 1 singles spot for the Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team and led the Seasiders to 9-0 sweep of No. 9 Quachita Baptist at Pensacola, Fla. yesterday.

The Seasider men also wrapped up their road trip with a win, beating the No. 6 Tigers 6-1.

Hegedus, who is ranked No. 3 in the nation just ahead of teammate Petra Gaspar, took Gaspar's spot in the order and outlasted No. 7 Victoria Dominga 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.

The other singles players for BYUH(20-0) won in straight sets.

The BYUH men (21-0) got off to a strong start by sweeping the three doubles matches.

HPU in championship: The Hawaii pacific women's tennis team reached the finals of the Xenia Anastasiadou tournament at Cal Poly Pomona yesterday, beating Abilene Christian 5-4.

Loni Matsunaga and Dora Holdarova survived three-set matches and Stephanie Kovacic won in the No. 1 spot.

The No. 17 Sea Warriors play No. 4 Barry University for the title this morning.

Sea Warriors split on road trip

Casey Onaga smashed a pinch-hit single back through the box to score Brian Hamilton in the top of the seventh as Hawaii Pacific salvaged a split with Cal State LA yesterday.

The Sea Warriors were down 3-2 after six but rallied and Steve Strader worked out of a jam in the bottom of the inning. HPU lost the first game 11-8.

Vulcans in bronze medal game in California

The Hawaii Hilo softball team broke into the winners column of the Division II Tournament of Champions yesterday, beating Western Oregon 2-1 at Modesto, Calif.

Abby Padasdao tripled in Leilani Hashida then scored on a Nancy Vega sacrifice fly in the sixth for the Vulcans.

UCLA knocks out Hawaii in water polo

The Hawaii water polo team lost to UCLA 17-5 on senior night.

The Bruins scored on their first four possessions. Tessa Curti and Karin van Hoff escored twice for UH.

It was the last home game for Christa Tackaberry and van Hoff.

McGuire-Turcotte takes 11th place in Texas

Hawaii's Casey McGuire-Turcotte placed 11th in the 1,500-meter event at the Littlefield Texas Relays at Austin yesterday.

McGuire-Turcotte was the only Wahine runner to compete yesterday, and ran a 4:32.75. It was one second off her personal best.

Wilton, Wallace, Lempa on QB Club agenda

The Honolulu Quarterback Club will have three UH coaches speak at its weekly luncheon tomorrow.

Scheduled to appear are volleyball coach Mike WIlton, basketball coach Riley Wallace and assistant football coach Kevin Lempa.

Wallace and Janka Gabrielova, the point guard for the women's basketball team, will be named the organization's sports persons for March.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Restaurant in Honolulu and the program begins promptly at noon.
