Kailua comes back
to beat Moanalua

In a game that featured 14 runs in the last two innings, Kailua proved again there is no team better in late-inning, big game heroics than the defending state champion Surfriders.

Kailua scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Moanalua 15-14 and remain atop the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division.

Bronson Ho singled home the game's final run when Menehune reliever Lorin Nakagawa delivered the fastball Ho was looking for.

"I was just thinking 'Stay small, single'," Ho said. "It was middle-out on the plate and I went with it. It felt good."

Garrett Yamamoto picked up the win for Kailua in relief of starter Kamaile Santos, who notched nine strikeouts.

"We were going to take him out in the fifth, but it was hard to get the ball out of Kamaile's hands," said Kailua coach Corey Ishigo. "He's a battler and he wanted the ball."

Even after giving way to Levi Manutai and Yamamoto, Santos found ways to contribute. In the sixth inning, with Kailua down 12-7, Santos drilled a one-out single to right to score Yamamoto. In the seventh he leaned into a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in a run.

The Kailua rally spoiled a great offensive showing by Moanalua's Brett Tanigawa, who went 4-for-5 with three doubles and 5 RBIs. James Strombach rocked Kailua pitching for a single, double and a triple.
