Harbor manager sentenced for thefts

KEALAKEKUA, Hawaii >> The former state district manager of small-boat harbors on the Big Island has been sentenced to six months in jail for stealing $28,000 in wages, state-purchased interisland flight coupons and car rental coupons.

Jeffrey S. Bearman, 44, was sentenced to a year in jail by Kona Circuit Judge Ronald Ibarra, but Ibarra suspended six months of that. Bearman must also remain on probation for five years and was ordered to repay the $28,000.

Bearman already repaid the money by taking out loans, said Deputy Attorney General Christopher Young.

Ibarra also ordered Bearman to perform 750 hours of community service and to continue receiving psychological treatment. The judge granted Bearman a deferred acceptance of a no-contest plea, meaning if he follows all sentencing requirements, he will not have a felony conviction on his record.

Self Day helps women receive free Pap tests

Free Pap tests will be offered by appointment on April 16 by Planned Parenthood of Hawaii to observe Self magazine's Self Day.

The tests will be conducted at the Honolulu clinic, 1350 S. King St., Suite 310, phone 589-1149; Kahului clinic on Maui, 140 Hoohana St., Suite 303, phone 808-871-1176; and the Kailua-Kona clinic on the Big Island, 75-184 Hualalai Road, Suite 205, phone 808-329-8211.

Thousands of women polled by Self revealed only 3 percent identified "taking time for themselves" as the top item on their to-do lists, while 70 percent reported their jobs were priority, Planned Parenthood said.

As a result, the magazine decided to establish Self Day as a national effort for women to take care of themselves for one day.

The April issue of the magazine will list freebies and discounts only available on April 16 and tell readers how to get them. They can call toll-free numbers that day, log on to Web sites and go to participating stores and gyms.

Call a Planned Parenthood Hawaii clinic in advance for free Pap tests. For more information, visit www.selfday.com.
