Kalakoa Jam promises
sweet taste of isle music

POHA jam is wonderful, guava jam is tasty, but the most memorable of all promises to be Kalakoa Jam. That's the name of the benefit for the UH Outreach College's Statewide Cultural Extension Program to bring arts and culture to the entire Hawaii community. Kalakoa Jam promises to follow in the tradition of Peter Moon and his Kanikapila concerts, complete with the blessing of the semi-retired Moon. It'll be held April 27 at Andrews Outdoor Theater and -- Aloha Stadium take note -- picnic coolers and backrests are happily encouraged. Performing will be Kanikapila veterans, the Makaha Sons, plus Hookena, Ledward Kaapana, Jake Shimabukuro, Kahala Moon and more. It'll be like the old Sunday Manoa days. You may recall that it was Moon who wrote the music to "Hawaiian Lullaby," the song that begins, "Where I live, there are rainbows." People are often staggered to learn that the lyrics were written by the "Merry Mex," longtime Manoa resident Hector Venegas ...

I DON'T know if Moon, who is Korean, will be attending the Korean Centennial Gala Fashion Show, with designs by local designer Jeannie Chun, but he ought to be. One who will be attending is HPD Chief Lee Donohue, honorary chair of the event. Donohue is half-Korean and married his high school sweetheart, Lucille Park, a second-generation Korean. Others invited to model include Chief Justice Ronald Moon, Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim and Centennial chair Donald Kim. Working co-chairs of the Sept. 28 event at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom, are Rep. Jack-ie Young and Korean Women's Club president Mignon Rhee. Chun, who owns the Jean Michel USA line, was named outstanding alum of the Kook Je Fashion Institute of Seoul. She has lived in the United States for 34 years. A large contributor to the event is Dr. Edison Miyawaki, part owner of the Cincinnati Bengals ...

VASHion statement

BETTER hurry if you want to register for the fourth annual Retail Merchants of Hawaii golf tourney April 12 at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club. The tourney is a benefit for VASH -- the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii. A notice of the event proclaims there's a $125 entry fee per person, and in true retail merchants' fashion, a price of $375 for a three-man team. For more info call 592-4200 ...

COMPADRES G.M. John Langan found himself slated to serve up his much-in-demand margaritas at two places Friday night. To the rescue came manager Tom Comog. Now Langan will be at the big MDA fund-raiser at the Royal Hawaiian on Friday, while Comog will be serving up margaritas for the Make-A-Wish Foundation at the Falls of Clyde ...

Yee cruise

ENTERTAINER Matt Yee was vacationing in Hawaii when he was asked to entertain on the Norwegian Star with Cathy Foy and Roger Carr. The hotel director loved his act and asked him to stay on full time. Alas, Yee is already booked for a year in advance by Royal Caribbean and is off for Miami on the largest ship in the world, Explorer of the Seas, where he'll be a featured entertainer. In August he'll entertain on the Legend of the Seas in Alaska, though he'd love to play the Star again.
