Secrets to Success

BY DEBORAH COLE MICEK

So what do you
really want?

Part one in three-week series

Do you have everything you want in your life? Is your business exactly how you want it? Have you ever wondered why you don't have what you want in your career, business or relationships? Too often, we use the same rationale for not having what we want. And while some things may be out of our control, there are far too many that are within our control, yet we fail to make a plan because of fear.

If I were a betting person, I would say that if you sat down right now and made a list of what you DO NOT like about your life, business, or relationships you would easily be able to name a dozen things. But if I asked you to list all the things you WANT from your life/business/relationships you may find this a bit more challenging.

In this three-part series we will examine some common pitfalls that may be hampering your goal achievement. You will learn strategies to define what you are looking for and how you can structure your life/business to match your dreams.

In the first part of this series, we will tackle some of the major reasons we do not always get what we want; but how you can. Let's explore the rationale for why most people do not set and achieve specific, measurable goals. Do any of these common pitfalls sound familiar to you?

>> Fear of the unknown. Since no one can give us a guarantee for our future, we tend to focus on the negative possibilities that may happen to us. This fear permeates all of our decisions and ambitions, dragging us down to a mundane existence.

>> Complacency and comfort. Most people would rather put up with a minor "discomfort" they know well, rather than risk a possible "pain" they have yet to experience. We often repeat behaviors -- good and bad -- to have consistency in our lives. Stepping out of our comfort zone is often our most difficult challenge.

>> Self-doubt. A belief that it is better to be "average" rather than extraordinary. This feeling stems from an assumption that we do not deserve or we are not qualified to succeed. These beliefs are often brought about by asking fear-based questions such as:
What if things don't work out?
What if my situation becomes worse than my current one?
What will other people say if I don't accomplish what I said I would?

This week's Goal Setting Success Secret: Most people do not have what they want in life because they do not specifically ask for it. They do not ask for what they want, because they do not know what to ask for. These common pitfalls can be overcome with a powerful and passionate focus. Here is your first step in taking control of your life.

This week's Coaching Tip: Think about what you really and truly want in your life/business/relationship. Ask yourself this powerful question: If you could have anything in life, what would it be? Decide what it is, and commit it to paper. Do this right now. Review your goal sheet throughout the coming week. Continue on in this process by completing each week's Coaching Tip so you will learn how to ask for what you really want and how you can get it.

In next weeks article we will look at how to set and achieve extraordinary goals for yourself and your business this year.
