Thomas headed to
junior national team

Hawaii freshman Delano Thomas has been asked to play for the Junior National team.

He will be the only Warrior on the roster.

Fellow freshman Jose Delgado has played with the Puerto Rican Junior National team. Last summer, setter Kimo Tuyay and outside hitter Tony Ching were the players selected for the team.

Thomas said it was "a little bit of a surprise but not really" since he had played with the USA youth national team for two years in high school.

Hawaii coach Mike Wilton said the experience could be good for Thomas.

"Those kinds of things depends on the individual," Wilton said. "It could be a great experience or a lousy one. It all depends on what you make out of it. If he's there to work hard and expand his horizons, it could be a great thing for him."

The 6-foot-7 middle blocker returned to the lineup last week after missing the Warriors last two road trips due to academic obligations.

Reserve middle blocker Brian Nordberg missed practice yesterday with a fever and sore throat. Nordberg is expected to be the backup for this week's matches against UCLA.
