Gov. Cayetano lauds

Gov. Ben Cayetano honored 63 Oahu volunteers, nominated for the Governor's 2002 Kilohana Awards for Outstanding Volunteerism, in a ceremony at Washington Place on March 15.

The program honors volunteers on each of six islands with a separate award ceremony on each island during March and April.

The Kilohana Awards are not intended to be competitive, but to honor Hawaii's volunteers for their service, said Stephanie Higa, a coordinator at the State Volunteer Services, Office of the Governor.

A State Volunteer Services selection committee selects one representative for each of five volunteer categories from each island to attend the statewide celebration, said Higa. Only one representative is chosen to represent each island of Molokai and Lanai because the number of volunteers nominated is so small, she said.

The awards program, coordinating with annual Volunteer Recognition Month activities in April, culminates with a statewide celebration at Washington Place on April 26 during National Volunteer Recognition Week, April 21-27. The statewide celebration will honor those chosen to represent each island as well as thank the sponsors and donors who help the State Volunteer Services highlight volunteer service in Hawaii.

All nominees from every island receive a certificate and a small koa clock, said Higa.

The representatives chosen from each island to attend the statewide ceremony at Washington Place are awarded a small Aloha Tower clock.
