Wahine off to
6-0 WAC start


The Hawaii softball team is off to its best start ever in the Western Athletic Conference.

Sheri Oronoz and Melissa Coogan limited San Jose State to just two runs as UH won 3-1 and 8-1 on the road yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine remained perfect in the Western Athletic Conference, at 6-0, and improved to 25-15 overall.

The Wahine won their first four WAC games in 1998, and nine of their first 10.

UH started 9-0 in the Big West in 1994.

Stacey Porter hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to account for all of Hawaii's runs in the first game.

It was Porter's 10th home run of the season, which is a school record.

Oronoz (15-7) scattered five hits, walking four and striking out two. Coogan (8-6) allowed six hits, with three walks and five strikeouts in the second game.

Porter knocked in three more runs with a pair of singles to give her six RBIs for the day. Trisha Ramos hit two triples and Kate Judd has three hits.

Hawaii and San Jose State play another doubleheader today, then the Wahine are off until playing four games at Louisiana Tech April 12-13.

Sea Warriors drop two: Western New Mexico defeated Hawaii Pacific 5-3 and 8-5 at Silver City, N.M., yesterday.

Mallory Anderson and Jessica Parra took the losses for HPU.

Brandy Choo Foo had three hits -- including a home run --and three RBIs from the leadoff spot and Christine Miranda had two hits and a pair of RBIs for the Sea Warriors.

Seasiders split doubleheader: Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Montana State-Billings 4-0 in the second game to salvage a split in Billings, Mont.

The Yellowjackets won the opener 7-1 for their first victory of the season. MSB is 1-13 in the PacWest and 1-15 overall.

Kassiopeia Hood threw a two-hit shutout, despite a temperature in the 30s and a light snowfall. Hood walked two and struck out six for her third shutout of the season for BYUH (9-18, 2-8).

Warriors play for fifth at Anteater Classic

The Hawaii men's tennis team beat Southwest Missouri State 6-1 yesterday and will play for fifth place in the UCI Anteater Classic in Irvine, Calif.

UH (15-9) meets Denver today in the final game of a 10-day road trip.

The Warriors won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests. Malindo Oda, Jorge Gonzalez, Lincoln Leeder and Kai Ohuchi all won in straight sets.

UH's Bloch takes 12th at NCAA swimming meet

Hawaii sophomore Cheyne Bloch finished 12th in the 100 breast yesterday at the Men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Ga.

Bloch, the lone swimmer representing UH, completed the race in 54.48 seconds.

Brendan Hansen of Texas won with a time of 52.47.

Bloch, seeded 17th, will race in the 200 breast event today, the final day of the championships.

Wahine water polo team up to 2-0 in tournament

The Hawaii water polo team won its third consecutive match yesterday, beating Brown 6-2 in the Rainbow Challenge at the Duke Kahanamoku pool.

Sophomore Chelsea Garner-Prohs scored three goals as UH improved to 2-0 in the tournament and 10-8 overall.

The Wahine led 4-3 at halftime and outscored the Bears 3-1 in the third quarter. Christa Tackaberry made thre saves.

Holiday and 3 coaches at Quarterback Club

Dwight Holiday, the co-chair of the American Cancer Society Coaches versus Cancer, joins a group of coaches at Monday's meeting of the Quarterback Club.

Also speaking are Hawaii Wahine basketball coach Vince Goo, football coach June Jones and Punahou girls basketball coach Mike Taylor.

Lunch at the Pagoda Restaurant begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program starts at noon.

A meeting of the Sports Person of the Month Committee will begin immediately after the program.
