Hawaiian Airlines announced yesterday that its president and chief operating officer, Robert Zoller, will leave the company April 15. Hawaiian Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Paul Casey will assume the title of company president while retaining his other positions.

H. Norman Davies Jr., Hawaiian's vice president of safety and security, will become executive vice president for operations.

Hawaiian Air Zoller's resignation was expected, and comes less than two weeks after Hawaiian pulled out of merger talks with rival Aloha Airlines.

In a statement, Hawaiian said Zoller plans to "pursue professional opportunities outside the company." Zoller could not be reached for comment.

Hawaiian spokesman Keoni Wagner said while Casey will take on some more oversight responsibilities, there will be little change at the company.

"Some responsibilities have shifted, but otherwise it's business as usual," he said.

Wagner said Hawaiian Chairman John Adams, Casey and Davies declined to comment.

But in a prepared statement, Adams said of Zoller: "Bob's leadership in the transformation of Hawaiian's fleet and operational structure has been pivotal."

Zoller joined Hawaiian Airlines as vice president and chief operating officer in December 1999. He was promoted to president in January 2001.

The management shuffle comes on the heels of the failed merger.

Aloha said merger talks had fallen through because Hawaiian had come up with a new proposal that Aloha could not accept.

That proposal, Aloha said, would have put Hawaiian's Adams in charge of the combined airline and given Hawaiian the right to appoint five of the 11 directors.

Adams is leader of the investment group bought control of Hawaiian in 1996.

Wagner could not say whether Adams would now be increasing his role in the running of the airline.

"He has always taken an active role in the company and will continue to do so," Wagner said.
