Kalaheo’s streak
snapped at 50

McKinley handed Kalaheo its first Oahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball loss since 1997 last night with a 33-29 win at the Mustangs' gym in Kailua.

Amber Lee scored eight of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Tigers past the Mustangs. McKinley outscored Kalaheo 12-2 in the final period.

The loss snapped Kalaheo's 50-game OIA winning streak. The Mustangs, the four-time defending OIA champion, had also won 46 consecutive OIA Eastern Division contests.

"It's a great win for our young team to let them know they can play with the best," McKinley coach Jesse Victorino said.

McKinley was the last team to beat Kalaheo in league play. The Tigers defeated Kalaheo in the 1997 season opener and again in that season's OIA title game.

"We were the last team to beat them and to be the first to beat them again is a big thing," Victorino said. "It's a great steppingstone for us, they grew up in 32 minutes tonight."

Kalaheo was 1-for-8 shooting and 0-for-5 behind the 3-point line in the decisive fourth quarter. Latoya Wily led the Mustangs with 14 points.

"McKinley just did some things that pushed us out of our offense that we didn't respond to," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "We're going to see what kind of team we have when we battle back against Farrington (next Tuesday)."
