The Hawaii defense and bullpen crashed and burned in the sixth inning as the Rainbows blew a four-run lead last night at Murakami Stadium.

A bad read on a line drive right to Arthur Guillen in center field started the inning, and 12 batters later, Lane Nogawa threw a relay into the UC Riverside dugout to bookend the horrendous inning.

The Highlanders rode the seven-hit, nine-run inning to a 12-7 victory in the Ohana Hotels & Resorts Rainbow Easter Tournament witnessed by 1,226 fans.

Cordell Perkins, who halted a Hawaii outburst in the top of the sixth, retired 10 consecutive Rainbows before walking Derek Honma with two outs in the ninth. He then fanned pinch hitter Chad Boudon to give UCR it's first tournament win. The 'Bows looked beat after UCR's rally.

"That's the mark of a team that doesn't know how to win," said UH coach Mike Trapasso, who was very animated as he spoke to the team in left field following the game.

"I'll put up with a lot of things, but I won't put up with a team that quits. We're not going to quit and I'm not going to quit on them."

The Rainbows scratched out a run in the first inning without benefit of a hit or a ball leaving the infield.

Guillen walked and stole second. Brent Cook walked. Both runners advanced on Nogawa's sacrifice bunt and Guillen scored on Gregg Omori's grounder to short.

The Highlanders retaliated with two quick runs in the bottom of the first off UH left-hander Aaron Pribble.

Brian Wahlbrink beat out a bunt single and took third on Adam Seuss' hit-and-run single to right. Wahlbrink scored on Jimmy Anderson's sacrifice fly to center. Seuss stopped at second on Tony Festa's single to left, then scored on Jason Collette's single to right.

Kevin Gilbride singled on a two-strike pitch and Tom Montgomery ripped a first-pitch line drive into left for a double to give UH runners at second and third with no outs to start the fourth inning.

With one out, Gilbride came home and Montgomery moved to third on Guillen's groundout to second. Cook then hit a high hopper over the mound that no one could field for an RBI infield single and a 3-2 Hawaii lead.

Pribble created his own trouble in the bottom of the fourth by hitting Randy Blood with a one-strike pitch. The Highlanders eventually tied the score at 3-3 as Blood was sacrificed to second, moved to third on Tim Faulkner's bloop single to center and scored on Wahlbrink's single to deep short.

After both teams went down in order in the fifth, the Rainbows broke loose for four runs in the sixth off Highlanders right-hander Julio Fernandez.

Montgomery singled to left on a 1-2 pitch and took second when Brian Bock was hit by a pitch. Guillen walked for the second time, loading the bases. Following a mound visit by the UCR pitching coach, Cook guided Fernandez's first pitch just wide of first base for a two-run single to right.

With Cook running on an 0-1 pitch, Nogawa lined a ball into the left-field corner that easily scored Guillen and Cook to increase the UH lead to 7-3.

The 'Bows have really struggled to enjoy prosperity this season and it didn't take long for the Highlanders to validate that.

Scott Powis was credited with a double that Guillen misjudged in center field. As he belatedly backtracked, the ball tipped off his glove and rolled to the wall. Blood walked on a 3-1 pitch ending Pribble's night.

Will Quaglieri walked the first batter he faced, got a ground-ball out, then surrendered three consecutive singles. That was enough for Trapasso.

Bryan Lee trotted in from the bullpen, but had little success as Festa singled, Jason Collette doubled and Powis was safe at first as Montgomery's throw to the plate in hopes of getting a forceout was wide. Blood singled in another run, and the ninth run of the inning scored when Nogawa's relay to first on a potential double play went into the Highlanders' dugout.

San Jose State 6, Hawaii-Hilo 5: The Spartans rallied behind Adam Shorsher's three-run homer in the eighth inning to remain atop the tournament standings. It was Shorsher's 11th circuit clout of the season.

UHH relief pitcher Jason Miyahira walked Gabe Lopez to open the inning and issued another free pass to Ryan Adams with one out. Shorsher then drilled Miyahira's first pitch over the left-field wall to nullify the Vulcans' upset bid.

Johnny Dudoit doubled home UHH's run in the first inning and connected for a two-run triple in the four-run second as UHH jumped to a quick 5-0 lead off SJSU starter Jeremy Rogelstad.

Lewis-Clark State 12, Hawaii Pacific 1: The Warriors slowly pulled away from the Sea Warriors, building a 6-0 lead after seven innings, then exploded for six runs in the eighth, which featured Brendan Ryan's three-run homer over the left-field wall.

Micah Furtado, a freshman second baseman from Kapaa High School, blasted a two-run homer for L-C State in the fifth inning. He also had a single and double to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

The Sea Warriors finally broke a two-game scoring drought in the bottom of the ninth inning when pinch hitter Travis Covey doubled off the center-field wall to score Chris Rosa.

LCS right-hander William Simmons limited HPU to one hit in the five innings he worked.
