Hemmings named
Waterman of the Year


Hawaii state senator Fred Hemmings was named the 2002 Waterman of the Year by the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association.

Hemmings, who won a host of contests in his pro surfing career, is most noted for helping to establish surfing as a viable pro sport.

The 1968 world champion is also an accomplished outrigger canoe paddler, having competed in the Molokai-to-Oahu race from 1956 to 1988.

"Senator Fred Hemmings left an indelible mark on professional surfing, both as a competitor and organizer," said Dick Baker, president of SIMA. "He never wavered in his principles, and we are honored to have him represent SIMA as Waterman of the Year."

Vulcans keep winning on Florida trip

Lara Hornbuckle outlasted Florida Southern's Laura Salatino to give the Hawaii-Hilo women's tennis team a 5-4 victory at Lakeland, Fla. yesterday.

Hornbuckle, a senior from South Africa, won 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

The Vulcans won two of the three doubles matches.

Michiko Tanaka and Annie Pham were Hilo's other doubles winners for the nation's 22nd-ranked Division II team.

Seasiders men's team still perfect: The top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii men's tennis team beat No. 21 UC-San Diego 7-2 yesterday in a Division II match at Laie.

Jan Krejci, Hung Soon Park, Andrew Makarevich, Eddie Merc and Hong Tae Kim all won singles matches for the Seasiders.

Vulcans sweep Eckerd to start Florida series

Hawaii-Hilo swept Eckerd College 7-1 and 7-4 in softball at St. Petersburg, Fla., yesterday.

Taysha Anderson shut down the Tritons in the first game and Kristine Kahoalii threw 3 1/3 innings of shutout ball in relief of Tara Martinez in the second game.

Leinani Hashida was perfect at the plate in the first game, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Hilo beats Hawaii at Oregon Invitational

Tysen Shinaut of Hawaii-Hilo beat Hawaii's Matt Kodama by two strokes at the Oregon Duck Invitational at Junction City, Ore., yesterday.

Kodama's 222 put the Warriors in 13th place, two spots behind Hawaii-Hilo.

Shinaut finished tied for 29th with a score of 220 while Kodama shot a 222 for 41st place.

Oregon won the tournament by a stroke over Washington State. The Cougars' Jon Reehoorn won medalist honors with a 10-under-par 206.

Wahine water polo team takes battle for ninth

The Hawaii women's water polo team beat co-No. 9 UC Santa Barbara 5-3 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex yesterday.

Karin van Hoff scored her second goal with 2:11 left to seal the win. Christa Tackaberry made 12 saves and Chelsea Garner-Prohs, Makana Whitford and Beth Novick also scored.

Komine appears in Sports Illustrated

Former Kalani High School standout Shane Komine appears in this week's Sports Illustrated, included among the magazine's "faces in the crowd" section.

Komine, a senior pitcher for Nebraska, won the honor by being named college baseball's national player of the week and setting school records for wins, innings pitched and strikeouts.

Komine was also named the Big 12 player of the week after beating No. 22 Texas Tech 3-1 Friday. It was the third ranked team in a row he has beaten.

Pintz adjusting to the college game

Northern Colorado freshman infielder Jana Pintz was named the North Central Conference Player of the Week by hitting .441 (15-for-34) in a 10-game swing through Florida last week.

She shared the award with Kelly Moats of Nebraska-Omaha.

Pintz was an all-state shortstop for Kailua High School.
