Musashimaru keeps
sole lead at 11-1



OSAKA, Japan (AP) -- Hawaii-born yokozuna Musashimaru, seeking his 10th tournament victory, kept the sole lead at 11-1, but ozeki Tochiazuma suffered his fourth defeat on Thursday with three days left in the 15-day Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.

One victory behind Musashimaru at 10-2 were ozeki Kaio and No. 11 maegashira Takanowaka.

In the day’s final bout at the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium in western Japan, Musashimaru charged sekiwake Kotomitsuki with a series of hand thrusts and sent him out, handing Kotomitsuki his sixth defeat against six victories.

Kaio grabbed his fellow ozeki Chiyotaikai’s belt quickly and bulldozed him out, leaving Chiyotaikai at 7-5.

Takanowaka crushed out No. 5 maegashira Otsukasa after charging him with hand thrusts. Otsukasa is 6-6.

Ozeki Musoyama attacked Tochiazuma with a series of hand thrusts and forced him out, leaving both wrestlers at 8-4.

Tochiazuma’s fourth defeat ended his hopes of being promoted to sumo’s highest rank of yokozuna.

In other major bouts, sekiwake Asashoryu, Mongolian Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj, charged No. 1 maegashira Tosanoumi with a series of hand thrusts and sent him out for his eight victory against four defeats. Tosanoumi is 4-8.

No. 6 maegashira Aminishiki fought off No. 11 maegashira Hamanishiki’s slapping attempt, grabbed his foe’s leg and toppled him for his ninth victory against three defeats. Hamanishiki is 5-7.

No. 3 maegashira Kyokushuzan, or Mongolian Batbayar Davaa, suffered his 11th defeat against one victory, as No. 7 maegashira Dejima crushed him out for his fourth victory against eight defeats.

Komusubi Wakanosato fought off No. 2 maegashira Kyokutenho’s neck throw attempt and sent him out to improve to 7-5. Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegynyam Nyamjav, is 4-8.
