High school stars
return for softball
at college level

Two former local high school softball standouts return for the Chevron Invitational this week at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, and both are swinging hot bats.

Hawaii hosts California, Hofstra, Northwestern and two teams from Nittaidai (Japan).

The Rainbow Wahine (20-12) are riding a five-game winning streak. They open tournament play today against the Bears at 5 p.m. Cal (29-9) is also hot, with six wins in its last seven games.

Freshman Kaleo Eldredge, a Baldwin High School graduate, leads the Bears with a .357 average and is on a six-game hitting streak.

Northwestern (6-6-1) has former St. Francis star J.C. Kira starting at catcher. The sophomore known for her defense is batting .368, and has an eight-game hitting streak going.

After a slow start, the Wahine have pumped up their averages. Stacey Porter (.351), Denise Dahlberg (.324), Kate Judd (.320) and Stacie Hirano (.307) are leading the way.

The tournament continues through the week, with a championship game scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday.

Cowgirls win again at Donnis Thompson

Oklahoma State successfully defended its Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Wahine Golf Invitational title yesterday at the Kaneohe Klipper Marine Golf Course.

The Cowgirls posted a team score of 908. Oklahoma finished second at 920.

Oklahoma State's Emma Zackrisson shot even-par 72 yesterday to finish with a three-day total of 222 and capture the individual title.

Hawaii finished ninth with a score of 980. Melanie Matsumura led the Rainbow Wahine with a total of 239 to tie for 26th place.

Vulcans score softball sweep of Seasiders

Diana Kim's ninth-inning single scored Michelle LaRose with the game-winning run to lift Hawaii-Hilo to a 1-0 softball victory over BYU-Hawaii yesterday in Hilo.

The Vulcans completed the doubleheader sweep of the Seasiders with an 8-0 win in the second game.

UH-Hilo improved to 21-7 overall and 10-2 in the Pacific West Conference.

UH-Hilo pitcher Taysha Anderson raised her record to 7-1 with her four strikeout performance in the first game. Kristine Kahoalii picked up the win in the second game to improve to 8-2.

Free Soccerfest tomorrow in Kalihi

There will be a Keiki Recreation League/Hawaii Youth Soccer Association Soccerfest for youth, ages 6 to 12, from Kalihi tomorrow at Kalihi Valley District Park from 3 to 6 p.m.

There will be skill activities and games. The event is being conducted by Tom Hart, UH Youth Soccer Association director of recreation, and is free.

PGA Grand Slam tickets now available

Tickets for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf are now available. The tournament is Nov. 25-27 at Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kauai and features the winners of the four major championships -- the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship.
