Basco in shutout form
after sore arm

Ryan Basco tossed a shutout to lead Mid-Pacific to a 5-0 win over St. Louis in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball game yesterday at Mid-Pacific.

The Owls improved to 2-0 in the league, while the Crusaders fell to 1-1.

The gem was Basco's first outing of the spring after recovering from a sore arm in the preseason. He struck out just one batter, but recorded 14 ground-ball outs in going the distance.

MPI jumped on St. Louis starter Guy McDowell for two runs in the first inning, highlighted by Troy Hanzawa's steal of home. The Owls added two runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to put the game away.

Kamehameha 8, Iolani 0: Kahe Santos and Keoni Ruth hit home runs and Isaac Kamai picked up a complete-game win as the Warriors shutout the Raiders.

Kamehameha (2-0) gave Kamai all the run support he needed with a five-run first inning outburst off of Iolani (0-1) starter Chris Loo. Santos went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs.

Baduria beats Spartans

Michelle Baduria hit an 18-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give Maryknoll an Interscholastic League of Honolulu road win over Mid-Pacific, 41-39.

Baduria's shot capped a Maryknoll comeback in the fourth quarter as the Spartans erased a nine-point deficit entering the final period.

Shannon Riley led Maryknoll with 14 points. Mid-Pacific's Caroline Beddow led all scorers with 17 points.

Kahuku 55, Kaiser 54: Mereani Lewenilovo scored on a putback with seven seconds left in the game to lift the Red Raiders to a road win over the Cougars.

Kaiser erased an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter and took a 54-53 lead on two free throws by Amanda Peterson with 20 seconds left. Lewenilovo then scored her game-winner to finish with nine points.

Kelei Naihe led Kahuku with 19 points. Peterson scored 19 for Kaiser, which hit 13 of 16 free throws in the final period.

>> Keahi Rawlins, Molokai baseball: Struck out 12 St. Anthony hitters en route to a no-hitter in the Farmers' 5-0 win in their Maui Interscholastic League opener.

Girls

>> Brittney Aiwohi, Sacred Hearts basketball: The senior scored 55 points and grabbed 28 rebounds in two games last week. She scored 34 points in the Lancers' 55-44 loss to Punahou. She then scored 21 in a 44-26 win over University the next night. She had 14 rebounds in both games and drained a total of seven 3-point shots.

>> Ikaika Neizman, Lahainaluna: Pitched nine innings to lead the Lunas to a 7-4 win over King Kekaulike. He struck out six batters in going the distance in the extra-inning victory.

>> Vinnie Souki, King Kekaulike: Nearly matched Neizman in the first game in taking a complete-game loss. He bounced back to drive in two runs in the rematch.

>> Ikaika Kawai, King Kekaulike: Went 2-for-3 with five RBIs to lead Na Alii to a 13-2 win over Lahainaluna in the second game of the series.

>> Kahe Santos, Kamehameha: Drove in four runs as the Warriors routed Damien 18-0.

>> Becky Hogue, Punahou: Had 36 points and 24 rebounds in two games last week. She scored 25 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked three shots in the Buffanblu's 62-56 win over Maryknoll. She made 9 of 10 shots from the field in the game.

>> Michelle Baduria, Maryknoll: Led the Spartans with 24 points, including five 3-pointers, in their loss to Punahou. She also scored nine points in a 69-39 win over University.

>> Stephanie Toshi, Mid-Pacific: Scored 31 points over two games for the Owls. She scored 17 in a 39-34 loss to Iolani and 14 in a 46-31 win over St. Francis. She hit four 3-pointers against St. Francis.

GOLF

>> Earl Medeiros, Waianae: Finished first in Monday's OIA West tournament with a 1-under-par 70 at the Makaha Golf Course.

>> Landon Mizuguchi, Kaiser: Won last week's OIA East tournament with a 2-over 74 at the West Loch Golf Course.

TRACK AND FIELD

>> Mei Li Nickles, Mililani: Won three events at last week's OIA meet. She won the girls 100-meter hurdles and long jump and was part of the Trojans' victorious 4x100-meter relay team.

>> April Wallace, Leilehua: Won the girls 100- and 200-meter races at last week's OIA meet.

>> Jeff Lim, Mililani: Finished first in both the boys 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs.

WEIGHTLIFTING

>> Kristel Ajifu, University: Won a gold medal in the girls 48 kg weight class at the National Junior Weightlifting Championships.

>> Chani Matsui, Kamehameha: Won a gold medal in the girls 43 kg weight class at the National Junior Weightlifting Championships.

>> Kyle Yamauchi, Punahou: Won a gold medal in the men's 62 kg weight class at the National Junior Weightlifting Championships.



Now You Know

>> The state girls golf individual championship has been spread out to all five of the state's high school leagues over the past five years.

ILH golfers won the first four titles, finishing with Anna Umemura (Punahou) in 1997. She was followed by Melanie Matsumura (Waiakea, BIIF), Shayna Miyajima (Baldwin, MIL), Merynn Ito (Aiea, OIA) and Rachel Kyono (Kauai, KIF).
