Hawaii

Heralding St. Paddy’s Day
and Bulletin's 1st birthday

THIS is such a big weekend in Hawaii for a number of reasons. First of all, today marks Vol. 2, No. 1 for the Star-Bulletin. It was a year ago today that new owner David Black watched as the first Star-Bulletin under his ownership rolled off the presses ... This is also the start of what looks to be a three-day St. Patrick's Day weekend. Downtown will be hopping with activities and music in the courtyard behind Ferguson's Pub in the Dillingham Transportation Building, and more of the same at the corner of Merchant and Nuuanu where Paddy's Day celebrants will be weaving their way between Murphy's and O'Toole's ... And last night was a salute to St. Louis grad Dean Pitchford at Mamiya Theatre on the school campus for the grand opening of Pitchford's original "Footloose," the same musical he produced on Broadway. He even flew in from L.A. for the opening ...

THE little Yellow Brick Theatre was filled to capacity Wednesday for the grand opening of "Harvey," Mary Chase's merry chase through the psyche of Elwood P. Dowd and his 7-foot-tall rabbit pal, Harvey. Jimmy Stewart made Elwood one of his most memorable roles, but that should take nothing away from local actor Sam Polson, who played him as a sincerely cheerful and bemused grandfatherly type, as he did in TAG's successful run of the show last year. Other standouts in The Actors Group cast on Keawe Street were TAG veteran Dorothy Stamp and Mary Frances Kabel-Gwin, reprising the role of Elwood's sister from last year ...

Berry interesting

ACTRESS Halle Berry bared body and soul for her role as Billy Bob Thornton's love interest in "Monster's Ball" and is favored to win an Oscar for Best Actress. But I can't for the life of me understand why people like Roger Ebert called it the best movie of the year. Far from it ... For those who want to know right away who the Oscar winners are, the Hawaii International Film Festival is again hosting "Oscar Night America" on March 24. The telecast will be shown live at that gathering at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, a benefit for HIFF, while it'll be shown on a delayed basis on TV ...

FOR those who are all for healthy eating and who are anti-meat, first of all my condolences. But if you're counted among that group, you should know about the shop opened by Tony Spadaro and Wes Zane called Mr. Goodburgers. It's located next to Quizno's, of all places, on Queen Street near the intersection of Alakea. There you can get tofu burgers or other veggie products to go and impress your co-workers at their desks ...

GUESTS at Lanai's Lodge at Koele or anyone else who'd like, can attend a concert from Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient Chun-Yee. The violin virtuoso will be accompanied by pianist Akira Eguchi tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. ...

Cake walk

THAT thing being built on the front lawn of the Academy of Arts is a giant birthday cake Fujio Kaneko is working on. He hopes to have it finished -- and decorated -- by April 14, when the Academy hosts its free Founder's Day Celebration. Happy 75th! ...
