Vanguard shuts out Hilo
to break 13-game streak


Vanguard pitcher Gina Libengood shut out Hawaii-Hilo, 4-0, in the first game of a softball doubleheader yesterday, snapping the Vulcans' 13-game winning streak.

Hilo salvaged the nightcap, 9-0, in five innings.

The Vulcans committed four errors in the loss, wasting a six-hit performance by starting pitcher Tara Martinez, who lost for the second time this season.

The Vulcans (16-3) wasted no time avenging the loss to the Lions (22-9-1), scoring three runs in the third and five more in the fifth.

The Vulcans scored their nine runs on only five hits, the biggest one a three-run double by Leilani Hashida.

Wahine sailors take third and fourth on East coast

The Hawaii women's sailing team finished in third place in the Navy Women's Spring Intersectional at Annapolis, Md., last weekend.

The coed team also raced last weekend, placing fourth at the St. Mary's Team race Intersectional at St. Mary's City, Md.

Seasiders extend unbeaten streaks

The Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis teams won yesterday, with the men beating both Whitman College and the U.S. Naval Academy, 7-0, and the women sweeping past Whitman.

The Seasiders men (9-0) did not lose a set, but the women (5-0) were even better, giving up only eight games in their nine matches.

Costas take 2 titles at Kauai Raceway Park

Wayne Costa and 12-year old Calvin Costa won their respective divisions in the Garden Isle Racing Association's first NHRA Championship of the year Sunday.

Wayne Costa won the Pro ET division in his Camaro over Manny Lawrence's thunderbird. Jonathon Green won the Super Street ET and Matt Pancho took the street ET. Calvin Costa won the junior ET class.

Hawaii lifters win 3 golds in California

Hawaii competitors took three gold medals at the 2002 National Junior Weightlifting Championships held March 10 at Torrance, Calif.

Chani Matsui and Kristel Ajifu, 2001 silver medallists, won gold medals in the 43 kilogram (94.6 pound) weight class and the 48 kilogram (105.6 pound) weight class, respectively. Kyle Yamauchi took the gold medal in the 62 kilogram (136.4 pound) weight class.
