assault on derelict cars, litter

At least 500 volunteers are expected to participate Saturday in Waimanalo's 2002 Spring Cleanup, also known as "WAR," Waimanalo Against Rubbish.

Volunteers meet at 7:30 a.m. at Waimanalo School and disperse from there to different cleanup areas.

Example sites where cleanup will occur are Haunaukoi Street (Waimanalo Village), the Kailua end of Waikupanaha Street, Huli Street -- the concrete run-off channel, and Kumuhau Street -- Makapuu side of the waste transfer station.

When the cleanup concludes about noon, volunteers will return to Waimanalo School for lunch and refreshments.

Local residents want to get rid of abandoned and derelict cars in Waimanalo.

Targeted cleanup items also include junk and litter along public streets, beaches, streams, and other neglected overgrown and trashed areas.

More than 130 volunteers from Hickam Air Force Base as well as some Marines will help with the cleanup.

The city and several Waimanalo residents and businesses will provide heavy equipment and operators to complete the work.
