HPU closes with win at Hilo

Star-Bulletin staff

Hawaii Pacific coach Tony Sellitto spent his last moments on the bench yesterday guiding his team to a 97-69 win over Hawaii-Hilo at Hilo.

Now he will spend his last moments as a coach in his office waiting for the phone to ring.

Sellitto will retire as a coach with 295 wins, the most by a men's college basketball coach at any level in Hawaii. Now he must wait to see if the NCAA regional selection committee awards him a final chance in the regional tournament.

Hawaii Pacific is fighting Brigham Young-Hawaii (18-9), Western Washington (20-6) and Cal Poly Pomona (17-8) for the final spot.

John Avilla led the way in Sellitto's last game, scoring 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field. Jeff Jensen and Nash Subotic each had 16 points.

Scott Prather led the Vulcans with 17 points, while Ryan Hogue scored eight and pulled down eight rebounds.

Hawaii Pacific ends Sellitto's final season 18-9, 9-6 in the Pacific West Conference. Hilo was also 18-9, but 8-7 in the conference.

Brigham Young-Hawaii 86, Chaminade 82: At McCabe Gym, Alexus Foyle scored 25 points and Brian Skinner added 20 to keep the Seasiders' slim playoff hopes alive.

BYUH (18-9, 10-5) clinched a share of the PacWest regular-season title but lost the automatic bid to the tournament because of a tiebreaker.

Chaminade finishes its season 16-10, 8-6 in the conference.

Hawaii Pacific and BYUH will learn their fates at 5:30 p.m. today.

Jaborri Thomas led the Silverswords with 19 points.
