Haiku contest a showcase of eloquence, wit

Local folks showed their poetic stuff in Nohea Gallery's Valentine's Day Haiku writing contest.

Glenda Young of Honolulu won the first place in the Romantic category with, "My hair entangled / in your lei of pikake - / do not unknot it."

Maria T. Garcia took top honors in the Humor category. Her poem read: "Be my honey-bunch! / I'll be your mochi crunch! / We can crackle up!"

Philip Thompson and Antoinette Papa won second place in the Romantic and Humor categories, respectively.

After students from Kamehameha Elementary entered the contest, the gallery decided to include a children's category. Top winner Savannah Wolfe and second place winner Cameron Mahi chose from heart boxes and mirrors for their prizes.

Adult first-place winners took home $125 Nohea Gallery gift certificates. Second place winners received handmade heart boxes.

Nohea Gallery said the contest drew such a good response - more than 250 entries - it plans to make the contest an annual event.

Maui Poetry, by Liz Kendall, illustrated by Melissa Thomas (Vantage Press, $9.99)

Marine biologist Kendall, who is also a Mormon, spent several years on Maui after shifts at the University of Utah and a school in the Netherlands. While here, she was moved to write several "ethereal mystery" poems that celebrate the way Maui opened the passages of her creativity. It's all rather descriptive and colorful, and hints at a bubbling spirituality. Unfortunately, Thomas' artwork is not as well presented, and seems to have been photographed off a TV screen.

The Power of the Stone -- A Hawaiian Ghost Story, by Shiho S. Nunes, illustrated by Herb Kawainui Kane (Island Heritage, $4.99)

Nunes' first attempt at juvenile fiction concerns a couple of Hawaiian kids who discover that Hawaiian relics belong in secret hiding places, not a museum. Beyond the agenda, this work skips right along and sweeps younger readers away.
