Athletes of the Week

BOYS

>> Derrick Low, Iolani basketball: Dazzled fans at Blaisdell Arena by scoring 33 points to lead the Raiders to a 58-57 win over Kalaheo in the final of the Hawaiian Airlines Boys State Basketball Championship. The sophomore made 12 of 16 shots from the field and hit the clinching free throw with 3.7 seconds left. He averaged 20.7 points in the tournament.

GIRLS

>> Tamarah Binek, Waiakea swimming: Won state titles in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races and swam on the Warriors' record-setting 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams at the Local Motion State Swimming and Diving Championships. Her performance helped Waiakea become the first neighbor island team to win a girls state team title.

BASKETBALL

>> Ikaika Alama-Francis, Kalaheo: Averaged 21.7 points in three state tournament games to help lead the Mustangs to a runner-up finish.

>> D.C. Daniels, Kalaheo: Closed his high school career by scoring 19.7 points per game in the state tournament. He scored 20 points in both the semifinals and final.

>> Bobby Nash, Iolani: Scored 21 points in the Raiders' semifinal win over Mililani. He also made four free throws late in the championship game to help Iolani hold off Kalaheo.

>> Daniel Tautofi, Kaimuki: Recorded double figures in scoring and rebounding in three state tournament games. He scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a 61-54 win over Mililani in the tournament's third-place game.

>> Rashaun Broadus, Mililani: Averaged 15 points per game in the state tournament.

>> Joel Botelho, Castle: Scored 11 points in the fourth quarter of the fifth-place game as the Knights erased a 13-point deficit in the last three minutes to beat Kamehameha.

>> Jordon Dizon, Waimea: Scored 47 points in two games to account for 64 percent of the Menehunes' scoring in the state tournament.

SWIMMING

>> Ashley Swart, Kaiser: Broke records in the girls 500 freestyle (4 minutes, 57.27 seconds) and 200 individual medley (2:03.80) at the state championships.

>> Hong Zhe Sun, Iolani: Set the boys record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.4 seconds. He also won the 100 backstroke to help lead the Raiders to the boys team championship.

>> Mark Eckert, Iolani: Broke Sun's record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.28. He also won the 500 freestyle.

>> Jenna Brilhante, Kalaheo: The senior broke a 16-year-old school record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.57 at the state championships.

WRESTLING

>> Lawrence Thain, Emile Suehiro and Rene Suehiro, McKinley: Won their weight classes to lead the Tigers to the OIA boys team championship.

>> Caylene Valdez, Shani Alvarado and Stephany Lee, Moanalua: Captured their weight class titles to help Moanalua to the OIA girls title.

>> Jonathan Spiker, Ben Willmore and Prince Brown, St. Louis: Led the Crusaders to the ILH boys team championship.

>> Iwalani Fonoimoana, Abigail Logan and Janelle Hanaike, Kamehameha: Won their weight classes to lead the Warriors to the ILH girls team title.

NOW YOU KNOW

>> Kailua won the first state wrestling championship in 1966. OIA teams have won 17 state boys titles and the ILH has won 19. The OIA has won all four girls state championships since its creation in 1998.
