Viloria back in ring in
6-rounder on ESPN

Flyweight boxer Brian Viloria returns to the ring today to put his unbeaten (5-0, 3 KOs) record on the line against Julio Cesar Oyuela (7-4-2, 2 KOs) in a six-rounder on the ESPN-televised "Super Brawl Sunday" in Cincinnati.

The ESPN broadcast begins at 11 a.m. Hawaii time. To document Viloria's preparation for this fight, MaxBoxing.com was granted exclusive access to Viloria's training sessions, and the result is a three-minute web documentary that captures the development of this highly regarded prospect.

The Waipahu native, who boxed in the 2000 Olympics, began his professional career on Oahu last May. He broke his hand in that fight, which set him back somewhat, but he has since shaken off the effects of the break.

Sea Warriors earn split against Seasiders

The Hawaii Pacific softball team earned a split in their Pacific West opener yesterday, losing to Brigham Young-Hawaii 4-2 then knocking the Seasiders around for a 10-1 win in the nightcap.

Tracy Bonomi shackled the Sea Warriors in the first game, allowing only five hits and one earned run in seven innings. Lyza Halas gave Bonomi (3-1) all the support she needed with a two-run double in the sixth inning to blow open a 2-1 game. Jessica Parra took the loss for HPU thanks to three Sea Warrior errors.

The second game was stopped after five innings as the angry Sea Warriors jumped on Jill Margette for six runs in just 3 1/3 innings. The top third of HPU's order did most the damage, going 6-for-9 with eight runs scored. Brandy Choy Foo moved to the leadoff spot and blasted a home run. Tiari Keliinoi followed her in the order with three hits.

Mallory Anderson went all the way for HPU, giving up only four hits and not allowing an earned run.

Vulcans sweep Silverswords: Leinani Hashida drove in Michelle Larose in the Vulcans' last at-bat to give them the first game of a doubleheader sweep over Chaminade yesterday. Hilo won that game 4-3 then trounced the Silverswords 7-0 in the second game.

Diana Kim was 5-for-7 and raised her batting average to .429.

Hawaii tennis team drops pair of matches

The Hawaii women's tennis team is still winless after losing two more matches over the weekend in California.

The Wahine lost 6-1 to Pacific on Friday and dropped a match to Sacramento State by the same score yesterday.

Freshman Kimberly Curtis got Hawaii's point against Pacific, beating Lisa Lester 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

The Wahine are 0-6 and play UC Santa Barbara today.

Total team effort helps Wahine beat Alumni

April Crowell and Tracie Uchima both went 2-for-3 as the Hawaii softball team beat the Alumni 5-1 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium yesterday.

Kate Judd added a double for 2 RBIs and Amy Taniguchi scored a pair of runs for the Wahine. Shannon Tabion, Paula Blanning and Melissa Coogan all pitched two scoreless innings, with Tabion starting and striking out four. Sheri Oronoz gave up the Wahine's lone run when Kelley Hupp scored on a wild pitch after pinch running for Joyce Antonio, who walked.

Richlyn Tada went the entire way for the Alumni, walking six and giving up six hits.

HPU gets comeback win against Cal State LA

Wade Taguchi homered and knocked in two runs and Hawaii Pacific scored three late runs to beat Cal State Los Angeles 5-4 yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

T.C. Everett and Andrew Stith added two more hits each. Neil Sullivan pitched the final 123 innings for the Sea Warriors (12-9) to earn the win.

HPU scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to erase a 4-2 deficit.

Cal State Los Angeles (5-16) had 12 hits, and couldn't take advantage of three HPU errors.

Weaver added to Islanders roster

Former Hawaii running back Avion Weaver has been assigned to the Hawaiian Islanders.

The 1999 Oahu Bowl MVP was also joined by Robert Kemfort, who played on both sides of the ball for UH.

Also added to the Islanders were Morrie Roe, Isaac White, Kawika Ordenstein and Darrell Jones.

The Islanders are part of arenafootball2.
