New releases from Hawaii authors, reviewed

To Honolulu In Five Days, by Lynn Blocker Krantz, Nick Krantz and Mary Thiele Fobian (Ten Speed Press, $24.95)There's Hawaii, and then there's the Hawaii of the imagination, which nestles among whispering palms, balmy breezes, sun-kissed waves, golden beaches and bronzed, friendly, helpful natives, and it resides on the shelf of popular conciousness somewhere between modern mythology and advertising hustle. A primary contributor to this image was Matson Lines' stately ocean liners, such as Lurline and Matsonia, ships that shuttled vacationers between the Mainland and the islands, as well as created the modern hotel industry here, and in their attention to detail and service, blurred the lines between hotel and ship. Matson may have invented the modern tour package, in which the journey became the destination itself. The authors have assembled a lovely package of nostalgic memories crafted out of Matson advertisements, photographs and keepsakes. The production and printing are first-rate, and for younger readers, it's an eye-opening glimpse at a time when style and substance were one and the same.
The Explorer Race and ISIS, "through" Robert Shapiro (Light Technology, $14.95) Honolulu resident Shapiro is a "master channeler" of past lives and beings, and they've explained to him that we are stardust, we are golden ... oops, that was the outer space explorers that colonized earth and left behind memories to be dully reprinted in this, Shapiro's eighth volume of metaphysical hoo-hah.
