Wet weather due Sunday with warm temperatures

Keep the extra sweaters and blankets handy at least until tomorrow. Then bring out the umbrellas.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the low to mid-60s, said Roy Matsuda, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service. But he said wind chill will not be as much of a factor.

Matsuda blames a cold front that swept through the islands earlier this week for the cool temperatures.

Rain is expected on Oahu as early as Sunday. "As we get another shower system here, it will warm up to the upper 60s and touch 70," Matsuda said.

"It will be beautiful up to that point," he added.

Mayor signs bill banning smoking in restaurants

Mayor Jeremy Harris signed into law yesterday an ordinance to ban smoking in restaurants, less than 24 hours after the City Council approved the measure by a 7-2 vote.

That means most indoor restaurants will be nonsmoking starting July 1. Indoor bars attached to restaurants will go smoke-free June 30, 2003. Smoking is allowed in outdoor sections of restaurants under certain conditions. The bill does not apply to stand-alone bars.

Harris said he vetoed a restaurant smoking ordinance in 1995 hoping that the industry would regulate itself. But that has not happened, he said.

"In this case, I don't think that the private sector stepped up to the plate and took care of it as they could have," the mayor said.

The industry's worries about the potential for lost restaurant patrons because of the bill are "real concerns," Harris said, but "the only way we'll know is to see how it works."

Harris noted that the issue is an emotional one for him because both his parents were smokers and died of lung cancer.

Hawaii-born sumo star may marry in the spring

TOKYO >> Hawaii-born Konishiki, one of the first foreign stars in Japanese sumo, will marry this spring, Japanese news media reported.

The 38-year-old Konishiki, born Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli, Hawaii, is set to wed 26-year-old Chie Iijima, a medical clinic employee, the Sankei Sports newspaper and other media reported.

Eiji Ushijima, a spokesman for Konishiki's talent agency, KP Co. Ltd., said that the two were "seriously involved" but had not yet decided to tie the knot.

It would be the second marriage for Konishiki, who retired from sumo in 1997 and has had a successful career in Japan's entertainment business since then.
