It’s too big
to be a brooch

The biggest thing offered for sale at the Dale G Cripps Jeweller liquidation by HawaiianAuctions.com is not the 9.31 carat fancy yellow loose diamond valued at $175,000.

Nor is it the Rolex, Cartier or Piaget watch selection.

Not even Cripps' vintage 1970 Jaguar XKE sports coupe is likely to attract as many oohs and aahs as the screaming red 1999 Lamborghini Diablo roadster added to the auction by contractor and exotic car enthusiast Joe Facciolla.

This 1999 Lamborghini Diablo Roadster is on the sales block.

The car has been transferred to HawaiianAuctions.com principal Paul Klink for purposes of the auction, Klink said. The Diablo and other auction items may be viewed at the company's Web site.

Brand new, the car would have sold for "around $250,000," taxes and other fees included, said Joe Nicolai, president of JN Lamborghini.

He added, "this model has gone up $25,000 in the last 60 days (because) they're not available on the new or used market," he said. "There were less than 100 of this model built that year."

The car was once offered for rental to visitors by two different companies on Oahu, and Nicolai confirmed that his service department has maintained it over the years.

Cripps has worked in the jewelry business in Hawaii since his arrival in 1980, establishing his own company in 1982. He moved into the first floor at Century Center in 1990, "knowing there was pretty much going to be a convention center built across the street."

"But we haven't had enough convention business," he said.

"My whole thing was trying to stay and capitalize on the development of the convention center," he said. "But 12 straight years is a long time to wait for change."

He will move to Beverly Hills while he still has "energy to pursue some things."

The preview begins at 8 a.m.; the auction at 10 in the store.
