When a dog’s gotta go,
TV cameras don’t matter

THE A.M. show on KITV yesterday featured, well, a B.M. News hostess. Jill Kuramoto was holding a doggie on her lap which a vet had brought in and recently cured of worms. The dog got loose and was assuming the position on the table when the vet realized what he was about to do and set him on the ground. Ready or not, the Channel 4 cameras picked up a shot of the dog on the floor of the set, leaving a reminder of his visit behind from beginning to end. It was just a bit unsettling for early morning viewing, and when co-host Paul Udell returned to the set, he seemed as queasy as some of the viewers. But Jill kept laughing ...

FOREVER Young: One of those promoting the visit here of qigong Master Li Junfeng at Unity Church of Diamond Head March 15 is local judo teacher Victor Young, who's taught tai chi free for more than 30 years. Li is chairman of the International Sheng Zhen Society and former Gold Medal Head Coach of the Beijing Wushu Team. As for Young, he was mentioned in this column way back when he played the son, America, in "The Hawaiians." ... Also mentioned here years ago was lyricist Art Freedman, who's packing up and moving to Nashville to find a composer to put music to the 15 lyrics he's written for his new "country" play. (You may recall Freedman wrote the lyrics to Roslyn's music in "Santa Claus Lives in Hawaii.") His mention was about Hawaii Ho Tours which he founded in 1972. He hired Sue Watts to help him out for three months, but ended up selling her the company 10 years later. On March 3, Watts, now Mrs. Coney Pokakaa, will have owned the company for 20 years and is still going strong ...

Is that you, Mom?

WHEN lunching at Hali'imaile General Store on Maui, Kate Horton, daughter of ex-Islanders Karen & Tom Horton, ran into her former University High School classmate Lita Collins behind the preparation counter. The Hortons live in the Bay Area but never once ran into Collins, fresh from the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and interning at Beverly Gannon's restaurant. There's a further twist to the story. Though the same age, Horton played the role of the mayor's wife in University High's production of "The Music Man" and Lita played her daughter ...

WHEN KHET-TV airs "A Day at the Met," about the Metropolitan Opera, tomorrow night, the last minute of the show will feature our new State Art Museum in the old Hemmeter Building, due to have a grand opening later this year ... There are lots of deer on Lanai and Saturday there'll be at least one Elke -- Elke Sommer that is. The "swingin' sixties" icon, now a self-taught painter, will show off her art at the Manele Bay Hotel and participate in a Q&A session ...

Youth helping youth

THE youthful members of Ad2, all under the age of 32, are holding "Spring Palette -- A Celebration of Wine, Fashion and the Arts" on Friday, March 1, at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales and a silent auction will go toward the 2002 marketing campaign that Ad2 is providing pro bono for Hale Kipa Inc., a non-profit social service organization that helps Hawaii's troubled youth ...
