Evening the score
at the Olympics

The Winter Olympics generally leaves me cold -- it ain't baseball, is it? -- but sometimes it's hard not to get sucked in, particularly when some Austrian maniac is rocketing downhill.

What I've noticed this year, however, are the many advertisements featuring amateur Olympic athletes. They're everywhere. Not only that, but many of the "amateurs" at the Games are professionals the rest of the year.

I asked my wife about it -- she's the athletic one in the family -- and she just rolled her eyes at me, and said, "The rules have changed. Things are different now."

Have they? Are they?

Have they matured enough to correct the inequities of the past? A name comes to mind:

Jim Thorpe.
