The Hawaii Blues Society presents The Rockin' Johnny
Band and Little Arthur Duncan in concert March 2.



Blues at Hawaiian Hut

The Hawaii Blues Society presents The Rockin' Johnny Band with special guest star Little Arthur Duncan in concert March 2 at the Ala Moana Hotel's South Seas Village/Hawaiian Hut.

The Chicago-based Rockin' Johnny Band has three CDs -- "Straight Out of Chicago," "Man's Temptation" and the live disc "More Real Folk Blues" -- to its credit.

The 65-year-old singer and harp player Little Arthur Duncan has been drawing crowds for decades with his Howlin' Wolf-inspired Chicago blues.

The concert will open at 8:30 p.m. with Keahi Conjugacion and Friends. Tickets are $26 in advance, $30 at the door, or $21 for HBS members. Call 864-6529.

Plays sought for fest

The Theatre Department of the Kona Association for the Performing Arts is seeking scripts for its 9th annual Original Play Festival taking place Aug. 19 to 24 at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu.

Scripts on any subject will be accepted through postmark date May 17, 2002. Entries should be typewritten, double-spaced, with numbered pages, and bound.

Three copies of each script are requested to expedite the evaluation process.

Musicals must be accompanied by three performance-quality audio tapes or CDs with voice tracks. Chosen plays will be mounted as staged readings, with minimal rehearsal and simple technical presentation.

Sing for fruit and veggies

Hey kids! Can you write a catchy tune? Friday is the deadline for third-grade classes to come up with an official theme song for HMSA's 5 A Day Friends program encouraging keiki to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

The first place winner will receive $2,500 for their school; the second place prize is $1,000, and third place is $500. All entrants will receive a 5 A Day treat for entering.

Relax at Windward

Windward Community College's Office of Continuing Education and Training is offering a series of stress-busting classes from March through May.

March workshops taught by Marie Riley are geared toward seniors 55 and older. Those who take all four classes will pay a discounted price of $30:

>> March 1: "Yoga Stretches for Flexibility in Your Back" -- Easy stretches are from the Lilias Folan video "Forever Flexible." Riley will also show reflexology on hands and feet corresponding to back and neck muscles, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Costs $9.

>> March 8: "Freedom of Movement for Chi Circulation" -- Learn tai chi arm movements for flexibility in the upper back, shoulders and neck, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Costs $9.

>> March 15: "Yoga and Dance Exercises for Posture" -- Practice tai chi shoulder and arm movements, plus Feldenkrais and Somatic movements," 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Costs $9.

>> March 22: "Improving Posture with Imagery" -- Practice alignment imagery and movements for greater ease in sitting, standing and walking, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Costs $9.

April and May classes are as follows:

>> April 6: "Jin Shin Accupressure Points" -- Locate classical acu-points corresponding to such common complaints as anxiety, headaches, eyestrain, insomnia, cramps and other ailments. Learn to apply this knowledge on yourself, friends and family, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Costs $19.

>> April 13: "Jin Shin Accupressure" -- Practice acu-point sequences on the back shoulders, neck and legs for rebalancing ki, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Costs $19.

>> April 20 and 27: "Chi Kung for Health" -- Gentle movements promote flexibility, breathing, mental focus and well-being, and can be incorporated into an exercise program, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Costs $27.

>> May 4: "Near-body Ki Balancing" -- Practice healing methods for such common complaints as sinus congestion and shoulder tension, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Costs $19.

Executive Women offers scholarships

The Honolulu Chapter of Executive Women International announces its 2002 Executive Women International Scholarship Program. The scholarship is open to male and female high school juniors who will be pursuing a four-year degree in any business or professional field of study. Applications are due by March 6. Awards are $3,500 for first place; $2,000, second place; $1,500, third place; and $1,000 for three finalists. Applications may be obtained from high school counselors. Pianists to compete

The National Society of Arts & Letters will hold a piano competition beginning 9 a.m. March 16 for individuals between the ages of 18 and 29. The competition will be held at Mozart House, The Cannery at Iwilei, 720 Iwilei Road, No. 8, Suite 322-24. Seating will be available for 80 observers.
