Castle captures Tesoro
Hawaii Cup

Sanoe Lee, Amanda Snodgrass and Faren Salis helped Castle win the Tesoro Hawaii Cup Saturday at the Oahu Interscholastic Association's paddling championship races Saturday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

The Tesoro Hawaii Cup is awarded to the school with the most points during the meet. Nanakuli came in second and Campbell finished third.

Castle's trio joined Malia Lee, Jolie Pia and Megan Canne to beat Kaimuki by 16 seconds in the girls varsity race. Waianae came in third and Kalaheo and McKinley rounded out the top five.

They then teamed up with Kamua Pahia, Naeole McFadden and Ty Fu to take the mixed varsity race by four seconds over Nanakuli with McKinley coming in third.

Mililani won the boys varsity race with a time of 4:09.1, five seconds better than Campbell and eight better than Nanakuli.

Kahuku won the girls junior varsity race, while Kaimuki took the boys and mixed races.

Fencing coming to the Blaisdell

The Hawaii Division of the United States Fencing Association is holding its 4th annual National Competition this weekend at 8 a.m. at the Neal Blaisdell Center.

Fencers will cross blades in foil, epee and sabre during the two-day event. Admission is free and spectators are welcome.

Millions in Japan view Honolulu Marathon

The Tokyo Broadcasting System's broadcast of the Honolulu Marathon on Dec. 9 was seen by 2,343,465 people, recent ratings show.

More than a million of those viewers were in Tokyo, with the rest being shown on six affiliates around the country.

The race was of particular interest in Hokkaido and Hiroshima, where 9 percent of potential households tuned in.

Mililani captures pep squad title

Mililani won the OIA West's varsity pep squad competition Saturday at Radford High School.

Radford took second place and Aiea came in third. Pearl City, Campbell and Waianae will join the top three in the OIA Championship Feb. 25 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Radford took the junior varsity title with Leilehua, Waipahu, Kapolei, Mililani and Waianae advancing.

Hawaii-Hilo splits with Pepperdine

Hawaii-Hilo beat Pepperdine 8-2 yesterday to force a split in their four-game baseball series at Simmons Field.

The Vulcans went into the seventh inning tied before Darren Chu doubled and scored a run in the seventh and hit a grand slam in the eighth. Chu finished the day 2-for-5, and Sean Tamura went 2-for-3.

Jason Castro (2-1) got the win with four innings of scoreless relief for the Vulcans.

Hilo (3-22-1) got two of its three wins in the series with the Waves, who fell to 5-6 despite Duke Sardinha's three hits.

Robert Shimabuku started the game for Hilo, going five innings and limiting the Waves to two runs on seven hits and a walk. He struck out two.

Sean Tamura was 2-for-3 from the plate with a run scored for the Vulcans, who had nine hits off two Pepperdine pitchers.

The Vulcans start a three game series with Brigham Young in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. today in Hilo that is to wrap up at 3 p.m. tomorrow before the Cougars head to Oahu to take on Hawaii.

Hawaii Pacific takes 2 in Koolau Classic

Hawaii Pacific won two games in the Koolau Classic softball tournament yesterday at HPU's windward campus in Kaneohe.

HPU advanced to the semifinals by beating Concordia 7-3 and Chaminade 8-0.

Hawaii-Hilo also advanced to the semifinals by beating Concordia 7-1.

The top three of HPU's order went 5-for-9 in the win over Concordia to help Jessica Parra improve to 3-1 after throwing six innings and giving up three runs.

Kristin Fujii bashed three hits for the Sea Warriors against Chaminade, while Mallory Anderson pitched a two-hitter in the win over the Silverswords. Kimberly Bailes and Loihi McKeague had Chaminade's hits.

Trisha Holley went 2-for-2 with a double and three stolen bases and Kristine Kahoalii hurled a five-hitter for the Vulcans in their win over Concordia.

Tiari Keliinoi had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs in HPU's victory over Concordia. Pitchers Jessica Parr and Malia Sullivan combined on a five-hitter.

This afternoon at Brigham Young-Hawaii in Laie, Hilo meets the winner of this morning's Brigham Young-Hawaii vs. Concordia game. Later, HPU takes on the winner of the Chaminade vs. Claremont game.

Today's title game is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Laie.
