Space station to appear in isle skies Wednesday

The International Space Station will make another spectacular appearance in Hawaii skies on Wednesday evening.

Weather permitting, sky-gazers in the Lahaina area should enjoy the most dramatic show, with the space station passing right in front of the half moon near the top of the sky.

On Oahu the space station will pass between Jupiter and the moon, which will have the bright planet Saturn as a close companion.

The space station will rise in the northwest at around 7:34 p.m. and will approach the moon, just past its first quarter phase, about three minutes later. The station will blink out of sight in the southeast around 7:39 p.m. when it enters the earth's shadow.

The space station, traveling more than 17,000 mph in orbit about 240 miles high, is visible at night when it passes overhead and is illuminated by the sun. The crew of three includes a Russian commander and two Americans, Navy Capt. Daniel Bursch and Air Force Col. Carl Walz.
