So much for going with the flow

Last week, I was heading over the Pali into town from Kailua. I cruised along with the flow of traffic, watching my speedometer creep toward 50 mph, then 55. The skies were clear, the road was dry and I wasn't passing anyone -- just making the commute.

Then, while coming around a bend in the highway, I saw a red sea of tail lights as drivers in front of me jammed on their brakes. A white "Talivan" was on the grass off the right side of the highway.

I can understand putting the vans in the residential area of Nuuanu. But to put one on an open stretch of road where it is not just safe but sensible to maintain a speed that matches the traffic flow?

Fortunately, I was following the pack at enough of a distance to slow down and "salute" the van operator as I passed. A co-worker wasn't so lucky. She got a ticket for driving 7 mph over the limit.

I guess I really do have to take my eyes off the road and concentrate on the speedometer more. Hope I don't crash.
