He built it, but now
he’s leaving

The custom Lanikai home built for former pro baseball player Sid Fernandez by Pyramid Construction 10 years ago is on the block.

"Steps from Lanikai beach," to use Realtor-speak, as did Mary Lavoie, the agent with the listing from Patricia Choi Realty Inc.

The 8,084-square-foot home has five bedrooms and 4.5 baths and has a separate building which at present is, "an awesome gym -- with a full bath," Lavoie said.

The area's hot days are cooled inside by central air conditioning, an electric gate opens access to a three-car garage and there is a pool with the de rigeur Jacuzzi for apres-workout relaxation.

"El Sid," his wife, Noelani, and their two children are "looking at a couple prospective homes" in the East Honolulu area, Lavoie said.

Fernandez's asking price of $2.495 million seems like a bit of a steal, all things being relative.

Also in Lanikai an 11,228-square-foot parcel recently sold for $2.1 million for the land only, said Lavoie. A 17,309-square-foot parcel with a six-bedroom, three-bath home is listed (with Case Properties Inc.) for $5 million.

A high-tech videographer will be at the hurler's home Wednesday to record images for the "virtual tour" that will appear on the realty company's Web site, probably within the week, Lavoie said.

Other than that there will be no open house at the soon-to-be-former Fernandez abode; in-person tours are by appoint- ment only.

Lanikai is on fire

You can quote Lavoie on that, as those are her words.

Maui also has some hot-selling areas, she said. "People want to live here -- rich people want to live here."

"I think part of it is interest rates -- but these are cash buyers too," Lavoie said.

"I don't know if Sept. 11th brought new meaning to 'quality of living,'" Lavoie said, but her other employer, a Mercedes dealership, had a record month.

Selling high-end real estate and high-end cars, she often deals with the same clients in her different jobs.

Sort-of shotgun wedding

John Browning, a descendant of the Browning Arms family, was married to Tammy Williamson in a black-tie affair at the Ihilani Spa resort over the weekend.

The groom is a known exotic car buff who cruises about in a Lamborghini Diablo VT among other sleek things. It seems fitting the wedding would occur where the Ferrari 360 Modena belonging to resort minority investor Jeffrey Stone is regularly seen.
