Warriors gain
easy road win
at Stanford

From staff and wire reports

PALO ALTO, Calif. >> Though the Hawaii volleyball team barely pulled out a win against Stanford on Tuesday, Hawaii coach Mike Wilton didn't hesitate to say that he would be dissatisfied with a series split against the second-ranked Cardinal.

Fortunately for him, his Warriors improved in the basics as No. 4 Hawaii swept Stanford yesterday 33-31, 30-25, 30-28.

The Warriors made sure the Cardinal will only see green the rest of the year in Burnham Pavilion. Stanford plays the rest of its home matches at Maples Pavilion.

Hawaii improves to 5-2 and 2-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. Stanford falls to 5-3 and 4-3.

"We took care of the ball and that was goal No. 1 for the night," Wilton said. "We did a pretty good job of that. Vernon did a nice job tonight. We served the ball much better. We were in system a good portion of the night."

Part of the reason was Podlewski, who played better overall. He struggled on Tuesday before being replaced by Jake Muise.

The difference in passing was obvious for middle blockers Dejan Miladinovic and Brian Nordberg. Miladinovic hit .563 with 10 kills, while terrorizing Stanford hitters with nine blocks, including two solo stuffs. Nordberg was perfect with eight kills on 10 swings and no errors.

The Warriors also outserved the Cardinal five aces to two.

Hawaii took advantage of libero David Vogel who was aced twice. The struggling Vogel replaced Seth Ring, who injured his left shoulder the night before.

Like Tuesday's match, no lead was safe. Stanford almost overcame a huge Hawaii advantage in Game 3. The Warriors were two points shy of winning the match with the score 28-22. The Cardinal rallied to within one with five straight points before a block by Miladinovic and a kill by Nordberg ended it.

Hawaii plays unranked Pacific tomorrow at 5 p.m. HST.
