Multimedia and culturally diverse entertainment centered around some of classical music's most respected soloists and repertoire highlight the Honolulu Symphony's 2002-2003 Halekulani MasterWorks Season beginning in September.

The 14-concert season pays tribute to Hawaii's cultural roots, which the symphony hopes, in part, will attract a younger, diverse audience.

In addition, a major opera star, to be announced later this month, is poised to perform next season.

Symphony Music Director and Conductor Sam Wong will conduct nine of the 14 concerts.

The season opens Sept. 13 with Grammy-nominated American violinist Hilary Hahn in a program spanning the Baroque to Romantic periods, and featuring the music of Bach and Brahms. The new season also includes Vivaldi's popular "The Four Seasons," Mahler's Symphony No. 5, and an All-Mozart weekend that will bring Van Cliburn International Piano Competition gold medalist Stanislav Loudenitch, in his Hawaii debut.

Other featured artists include violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and returning cellist Han-Na Chang, who will help commemorate the Korean Centennial celebrating 100 years of immigration to Hawaii.

Other cultural programs include:

>> Japanese taiko drum master Kenny Endo with a synthesis of traditional Japanese drumming techniques and Western jazz percussion styles.

>> Chinese composer and conductor Tan Dun, who won an Academy Award for his "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" soundtrack, will conduct his cinematic compositions while portions of each film are screened.

>> The symphony's season finale is a new interpretation of Ravel's "La Valse" by the symphony's hula halau partner, Kapa Hula O Kauanoe O Wa'ahila in the program "Dances Around the World." The program also features Chinese tap dancer Charles Teo in Gould's "Tap Dance Concerto."

The season includes narrated productions of Shakespeare's comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with Mendelssohn's musical interpretation, and a narrated version of Edward Grieg's musical adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's 19th-century drama "Peer Gynt," the story of a Norwegian Don Juan.

The season takes the symphony "on a new path toward a unique vision of how an orchestra should relate to its community," said symphony Executive Director Stephen Bloom.

The symphony will move the Tuesday night concert series to Fridays to increase audiences, after test concerts this season proved popular.
