[ISLAND HOPPING]

You can't watch all day

For those looking for a place to stay while watching the whales, Ka'anapali Beach Hotel is offering a five-night package that includes a Whale Watch Adventure Sail with Trilogy Excursions, admission to the Maui Ocean Center, a daily buffet breakfast in the Ka'anapali Mixed Plate Restaurant, and admission to the Black Rock Illusions dinner show, in addition to partial ocean-view accommodations and a compact car.

On Wednesdays and Sundays, take advantage of the hotel's free lectures on the humpback whale and coral reefs, presented by marine naturalists from the Maui Ocean Center.

The package is priced at $638 per person based on double occupancy, which breaks down to a little more than $127 per day.

Maui greets horse year

Wailuku will celebrate Chinese New Year from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 9 on Market Street.

"Celebrate the Year of the Horse" will feature traditional lion dances, an appearance by 53rd Narcissus Queen Kuuleialoha Chun and her court, Chinese food and arts and crafts booths, entertainment, a pot sticker cook-off, and a children's art contest. Admission is free.

Market Street will be closed to traffic from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the event that begins with an explosion of firecrackers and the lion snaking its way along Market Street. Li-see (red envelopes) will be distributed so spectators can "feed" the lion for good luck.

The pot sticker cook-off starts at noon, with invited participants competing in celebrity and professional divisions.

For the third year, Sig Zane Designs is sponsoring the children's art contest. The exhibit's opening reception takes place 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at First Hawaiian Bank on Market Street.
