The Alumni started off like they were going to continue their domination of the Hawaii Rainbows in the annual meeting prior to the start of the regular season.

But in the end, the Rainbows beat the Alumni 14-10 at Les Murakami Stadium yesterday.

Getting two home runs from Kenny Harrison and doubles from Patrick Scalabrini, Ron Nomura and Sean Takamori among their first eight hits, the alums led 7-2 after an inning and a half. Most of the damage was inflicted on the UH starter, senior right-hander Sean Yamashita.

Rainbow coach Mike Trapasso went to the bullpen quickly. He turned the mound chores over to freshman right-hander Ricky Bauer, who promptly watched Harrison bounce his second pitch off the TV stand behind the center-field fence. It was the only earned run Bauer surrendered over the next 513 innings.

Hawaii's Jason Piepmeier gave up one run on three hits after pitching the final 213 innings against the Alumni yesterday.

"Ricky Bauer was the key to the game for us. He settled the game," said Trapasso. "He came in, gave up a couple of runs, but pitched well. He got ahead (on the count) and he kept the ball down.

"Sean threw everything up in the zone and every time he came with off-speed pitches his curve was flat and it just got hammered.

"When we brought Bauer in, we said nothing off-speed to anybody who is five years older than you guys, because everything off-speed just goes right into their bat speed and gives them something to catch up to."

The Rainbows scored in each of the first five innings, finally edging ahead of the Alumni, 9-8, with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cortland Wilson's ground-rule double to right-center field scored Gregg Omori, and Scooter Martines scored when Brian Bock reached on an infield error.

In the 'Bows' five-run fifth inning, Derek Honma and Lane Nogawa were hit by pitches to start the inning. Art Guillen beat out a bunt up the third base line to load the bases. Brent Cook lined a single to left to score Honma. Omori also singled to left, scoring Nogawa and Guillen, and Cook scored on a fielding error in the outfield. Omori came home on a throwing error by Alumni catcher Tyler Cheff.

"We knew we wanted it to be a fun game, but we also wanted it to be a dress rehearsal. And, we still wanted to win. To me, having fun is playing well and winning. We were out there to get a job done." Trapasso said.

"What I'm pleased with is we did well in the final seven innings. We gave up three runs. If you go seven innings at a time and only give up three runs, you should have a chance to win the ball game."

Omori, the No. 3 hitter in the lineup, finished with three hits and four runs batted in. He had a two-run homer in the first inning. Guillen, the leadoff batter, had two hits as did Cook hitting in the second spot.

Tim Montgomery and Honma hit back-to-back home runs to start the second inning.

Overall, Trapasso was pleased with the effort. He thought the Rainbows played good defense even though the two errors each cost a run.

Freshman right-hander Jason Piepmeier finished the game after Bauer reached his 90-pitch limit in the seventh inning. Piepmeier gave up three hits and one run, a line drive homer over the left-center field wall by Scalabrini.

"I've said all along we've got a lot of work to do and it starts on the mound," said Trapasso. "Some of those pitches they hit off Sean you hoped they would hit to teach the pitcher a lesson. If you throw the ball up there, that is what's supposed to happen.

"We will be a team that gives up hits. That doesn't bother me if our bases on balls are below three and a half a game. Our approach is to force contact (by opposing batters) and play defense."

Note: Senior outfielderdesignated hitter Scooter Martines and junior third baseman Brent Cook are the Rainbow captains.
