Hawaii built a 21-point lead five minutes, 34 seconds into the second half and went on to a 73-53 Western Athletic Conference women's basketball victory over Nevada last night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The win moved the Wahine (12-4, 5-2 WAC) into third place behind Rice (13-4, 7-1), which has a date at first-place Louisiana Tech (13-3, 8-0) tomorrow night.

The Wolf Pack threw a full-court, trapping press at Hawaii on several occasions, but the Wahine did not have much difficulty in reaching the offensive end with the starting five on the floor.

Natasja Allen led four Wahine in double figures with 17 points. She was 7-for-9 from the field and 3-for-4 from the line.

Janka Gabrielova followed with 14 points as she went 4-for-5 on 3-pointers, including three consecutive attempts during the run that gave UH its big lead early in the second half.

Hawaii's Janka Gabrielova scored 14 points with six assists yesterday against Nevada.

Christen Roper earned her fourth double-double of the season by scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. She also blocked two Nevada shots, and she had three assists after recording just seven in the first 15 games.

Karena Greeny contributed 10 points and followed Roper by controlling eight balls off the boards

April Atuaia, who scored all nine of her points in the first half, finished with a game-high eight assists.

The game began in racehorse fashion with both teams connecting on their early shots. The Wahine were 6-for-9 from the floor at the first media break, and the Wolf Pack were 5-for-9.

Katie Golomb, who found a seam in the UH defense, hit three consecutive jumpers, scoring six of Nevada's first 10 points. Her third basket tied the score at 10 with 16:18 left in the half.

Hawaii adjusted its defense, shut down the opening Golomb liked and forced Nevada into mostly a perimeter shooting game.

"We made a switch, putting Roper on Golomb and Allen on (Nevada center Kate) Smith," said UH coach Vince Goo. "The biggest difference tonight was our defense."

The move worked as the taller Roper was better able to defend the fade away jumper Golomb was hitting from the 10- to 12-foot range.

For the final 16:18 of the first half, the UH defense held the Wolf Pack to 12 points on 6-for-25 field-goal shooting. The Wahine also experienced some cold shooting spells, but did build their lead to 33-22 at intermission. The most significant run came when UH broke the 10-10 tie on Allen's layup and outscored Nevada 14-4 over the next 10 minutes.

Atuaia and Allen led the way with nine points apiece in the first half. The Wahine controlled the boards in the opening half, enjoying a 26-14 advantage.

Hawaii finished by hitting 44 percent of its field goal attempts while holding the Wolf Pack to 33 percent.

Nevada is now 1-7 on the road this season.

Hawaii plays Fresno State tomorrow night at 7. The Bulldogs (8-10, 3-5) lost to host San Jose State last night, 77-62.

"Fresno State is a lot like Nevada, but the Bulldogs are more of a freelance team," said Goo.
