Ah Mow released
from Italy hospital

Former Hawaii all-American setter Robyn Ah Mow was released yesterday from the Vicenza (Italy) Hospital following a serious car accident early Monday morning.

Ah Mow had been hospitalized with a concussion and severe bruises after the car she was driving crashed into a wall as she was returning home from an Italian pro women's volleyball match in Jesi, Italy.

Ah Mow and Metodo Minetti Vicenza teammate Iskra Mijalic jumped from the car after Ah Mow lost control of the vehicle when hitting an icy patch in the road. According to Ah Mow's former Wahine teammate Heather Bown, had Ah Mow and Mijalic stayed with the car, even with seatbelts, that it was likely the pair would have not survived. The car was totaled after crashing into a wall.

According to Vicenza general manager Giovanni Coviello, Ah Mow's parents, Lovina and Talmage Ah Mow of Honolulu, were at the hospital when their daughter was released a day ahead of schedule. Doctors had waited on the results from the CT scan before releasing Ah Mow. (An earlier report said it was an MRI test).

Four former Wahine are competing in the Italian A1 league, the top division for women in the country. Bown's team, Starfin Ravenna, faced Ah Mow's Vicenza team in a friendly (non-counting) match yesterday in Ravenna.

Also competing in the league are former Hawaii players Angelica Ljungquist (Famili Imola), who drove two hours yesterday to visit Ah Mow, and Therese Crawford (Edison Modena).

Ah Mow is expected to return to the team within the next two weeks.

Mijalic will remain hospitalized for approximately two weeks. She underwent four hours of surgery following an injury to her first vertebra and is expected to fully recover, perhaps returning to volleyball in a year.

Aloha United scored three goals from close range in the second half to improve to 1-1-1 in the tournament being held at Dunedin, New Zealand.

Wendell Staszkow, with an assist from Jim Mitten, put Aloha United ahead with a eight-yard shot 10 minutes into the second half. Manny Fernandes scored from six yards out after gathering in his own rebound.

With five minutes to go, Yuji Ikeda's hard shot from the 18-yard line was deflected by a defender to Oren Schlieman who pushed the ball into the net.
