Asia-Pacific vision sought
in next Manoa chancellor

UH formally launches its search
for a leader of its flagship campus

The University of Hawaii has formally started a search for a permanent chancellor for its flagship Manoa campus.

"What we're looking for is somebody who has some sense envisioning Asia-Pacific as an increasing part of the UH mission," said Deane Neubauer, interim Manoa chancellor, who will oversee the chancellor search in his other role as UH system vice president of academic affairs.

"We teach more Asian languages than any university in the United States, public or private. We're halfway to Asia in real-time terms. We have an increasing set of scholars in the university who identify themselves as Asia-Pacific specialists, and increasingly our international students are focused on Asia," Neubauer said.

The chancellor position was separated from the UH presidency in July, when President Evan Dobelle took office.

The 15-member search committee will consist of six faculty members, two department administrators, two students (one graduate and one undergraduate), three university employees and two community members (including one alumnus).

Joanne Cooper, chairwoman of the faculty senate, will lead the committee.

"This search represents an unprecedented opportunity for faculty to be centrally involved in the governance of the university," she said.

The chancellor's salary will be based on experience, but Neubauer said that his $238,000 salary as interim chancellor is a target, as it is the median salary for chief operating officers of research universities nationally.

Unlike the search for the system president, which was shrouded in secrecy, Neubauer said that three finalists will be presented to the university community in late April or early May.

Said Dobelle: "There are no limits to the possibilities here: Hawaii is positioned between East and West -- not only geographically, but culturally as well. Our state's small size means that the university has an unusually large impact, both as the primary engine for the economy and the caretaker of Hawaii's unique culture. We are seeking a chancellor with bold ideas, a vision for east-west relations and multicultural sensitivity."
