Tochiazuma retains the
lead at New Year sumo

TOKYO (AP) - Tochiazuma remained undefeated and in sole possession of the lead Wednesday with an easy victory over Kotonowaka on the 11th day of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament.

Ozeki (champion) Tochiazuma quickly took control of the bout at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan, forcing the lumbering No. 5 maegashira (senior wrestler) on his heels and to the edge. Tochiazuma then grabbed Kotonowaka's belt and nudged him out of the ring.

The win kept Tochiazuma one win ahead of ozeki Chiyotaikai, who improved to 10-1.

Chiyotaikai handed sekiwake (junior champion) Kotomitsuki his second loss, driving the lower-ranked wrestler out within seconds.

But Chiyotaikai appeared to have twisted his left ankle and it wasn't clear if he would be fit for future matches.

In other major bouts Wednesday, komusubi (junior champion second class) Kyokutenho, or Mongolian Tsevegnyam Nyamjav, waltzed out No. 2 maegashira Toki, leaving both wrestlers at 3-8.

In a battle of Mongolian grapplers, sekiwake Asashoryu, or Dolgorsvren Dagvadrj, got an arm-lock on Kyokushuzan, or Batbayer Davaa, and hoisted the top maegashira up and over the straw ridge. Asashoryu's record is 6-5 while Kyokushuzan's is 7-4.

Ozeki Kaio added to his wins (8-3) after tossing out the struggling No. 4 maegashira Dejima, who suffered his seventh loss of the tournament.

Further down the ranks, No. 15 maegashira Sentoryu, or American Henry Armstrong Miller, charged No. 3 juryo-division wrestler Tawanoyama with a series of hand thrusts and drove him down for his fifth victory against six defeats. Tawanoyama is 7-4.

In the 26-member juryo division just below the senior makuuchi division, Takamisakari fought off Kuniazuma's arm throw attempts and sent him out to advance to 10-1. Kuniazuma, or Brazilian Vander Ramos, is 5-6.
