Vulcan pitchers pounded

The Hawaii-Hilo baseball team gave up 20 runs in a 10-0 and 10-4 double header sweep by Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo yesterday.

The Vulcans (0-6) have given up 10 runs in each of their last three games.

The Mustangs needed only five innings to beat the Vulcans in the first game when starter Jason Castro (0-1) gave up seven runs on five hits and five walks in 213 innings.

Hilo led the second game 3-1 after five innings, but the Mustangs (2-0) caught up with starter Robert Shimabuku with two runs and went ahead with two more off Joel Zimmerman (0-1).

Right fielder Keola Park and designated hitter Ryan Hanohano had three hits of the Vulcans 11 hits in the two games.

The teams play again today at 9 a.m at the Old Kona Airport Baseball Field.

Hawaii Pacific splits with Sonoma State

Hawaii Pacific split with Sonoma State in its season-opening doubleheader against Sonoma State at Hans L'Orange Park yesterday.

Sonoma State scored seven runs in the bottom of the last inning to win the opener 9-6.

Derek Little's grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning gave HPU a 9-6 lead in a 9-7 win in the nightcap.

Neil Sullivan was the Sea Warriors' winning pitcher, striking out seven in 513 innings of relief.

Tanoue, Yau shoot for Junior Olympic gold

Michael Tanoue led St. Louis School in the Hawaii Junior Olympics 3 position smallbore shooting competition at the St. louis range yesterday.

Tanoue led a Crusader sweep of the top three spots, beating Eric Okamoto by two points, 532-530. Fellow Crusader Blake Cuban came in third with a 518.

Vicci Yau of Punahou won the girls event, shooting a 538 to beat Shannon Li of Sacred Hearts by two, 538-536.

Ashley Murakami and Krystle Sze of Sacred Hearts shared the bronze with scores of 512, one better than Kara Tellio of Punahou.

The Crusader Gold team of Tanoue, Li, Okamoto and Sze won the team title over Punahou Gold 2110-2043.

Crusader Silver took third.
