Wounded Wahine lash
out at Golden Hurricane

TULSA, Okla. >> The Hawaii women's basketball team did not feel very good after Thursday's performance at Rice.

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane suffered what UH coach Vince Goo called a "stinger" the same night, blowing a seven-point lead with 44 seconds left against San Jose State.

"We were wounded. We told our players they can't control how Tulsa feels, but they can control how they feel," Goo said. "When you play great, you can't wait to put the uniform on again. When you don't, you either don't want to put the uniform on or you want to so you can play better.

"We didn't play well against Rice. The number one reason was I didn't coach well. We didn't practice well the day before Rice and we didn't do anything about it."

The Wahine did much better yesterday, handing the Golden Hurricane their second consecutive loss, 65-51, in a Western Athletic Conference basketball game at the Donald W. Reynolds Center, which will be the site the WAC Tournament in March.

Not only did the Wahine find the range early, hitting six of their first eight field-goal attempts, they sank seven of their first eight 3-point shots in the first 13 minutes of action.

Tulsa (10-7 overall, 5-2) never led as UH (11-4, 4-2) shot out to a 33-14 lead, outscoring the Golden Hurricane 20-8 during one six-minute stretch.

Janka Gabrielova, UH's leading scorer with 15 points, and Chelsea Wagner made two 3-pointers each and Karena Greeny hit one during the opening 11 minutes.

"When we got the early lead I told the players they may think they were playing at three-quarters speed, but they were playing at full speed. The difference between today and Thursday is they were playing in control and in balance today. We were in balance when we penetrated with the dribble and when we took shots," Goo said.

Defensively, the Wahine were tough again.

Christen Roper, at 6-foot-5, held Tulsa's 6-4 center Alyssa Shriver to 1-for-10 shooting from the field. Roper scored seven points and had a game-high 11 rebounds.

Gabrielova was so effective against Tulsa starting point guard LeAnn Upshaw that Upshaw only played seven minutes.

April Atuaia limited Candice Brewer, a quick wing player, to 2-for-8 from the field and Karena Greeny kept Carla Morrow from driving to the basket, forcing the 6-foot forward into pull-up jump shots and a 1-for-8 day from the field.

"Our assistant coaches did a great job of preparing our players for their individual assignments," Goo said.
