The Hawaii Community Foundation Grants has given a total of $1 million in grants to several local nonprofit organizations to help meet community needs following the Sept. 11 attack.

Kelvin Taketa, president and chief executive officer of HCF, said, "Since we're only beginning to see the gravity of the Sept. 11 impacts in Hawaii, these grants are intended to provide stability rather than permanent solutions for the community."

Grants awarded include:

>> $300,000 in tuition assistance for preschools statewide to assist families unable to meet the tuition requirements for their children from now until summer 2002. Preschools include the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ, Family Services Center, KCAA Preschools of Hawaii, Kamaaina Care Inc., Rainbow School, Seagull Schools and Waianae Coast Early Childhood Services.

>> $300,000 for the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools and the Hawaii Catholic Schools to be used as tuition assistance for students whose families lost their household income.

>> $200,000 to various organizations that provide services to immigrants and their families in need. Organizations include Catholic Charities, Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council, Kauai Economic Opportunity, Inc., Maui Economic Opportunity Inc., Office of Social Ministry, Pacific Gateway Center and Susannah Wesley Community Center.

>> $150,000 to the Hawaii Primary Care Association to support the Medicine Bank for purchase of medication for distribution to primary health care clinics.
