Campbell earned a spot in the state softball tournament by beating Kaimuki 10-7 in 10 innings yesterday at Kapolei High School's field in the fifth-place game of the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs.

Kaimuki erased a 5-0 deficit to send the game to extra innings and rallied for two runs in the eighth to extend the game again. But the Bulldogs couldn't answer Campbell's final outburst, as the Sabers scored three runs in the top of the 10th to finally put Kaimuki away.

"It was two good teams and they both played with heart and soul," Campbell coach Wayne Nagamine said. "It's just too bad someone had to lose."

With the win, Campbell joins Mililani, Castle, Kailua and Leilehua as the OIA's representatives in the upcoming Chevron State Softball Championships.

Mililani faces Castle today for the OIA championship at Kapolei. The title game will be preceded by the third-place game between Kailua and Leilehua, which starts at 11 a.m.

Campbell held a comfortable 5-0 lead going into the sixth inning when Kaimuki's Lovely Moyle hit a two-run single. The Bulldogs took advantage of a pair of Campbell errors in the seventh to stay alive.

Moyle drove in Trina La Rosa to cut the deficit to 5-3. With two out and runners on first and third, Crissy Moefu hit a ground ball to third, but the throw to first was high allowing Umu Matealona and Moyle to score and tie the game.

Moefu, representing the winning run, advanced to third, but Campbell pitcher Jenna Sylva got Dalia Solia to pop up to shortstop to end the threat.

Campbell went ahead in the eighth on Ashley Streadbeck's two-run single. But Kaimuki answered in the bottom of the inning on Matelona's run-scoring double and an RBI single by Tausaga.

Campbell's Jana Kealohi walked to open the 10th inning and was sacrificed to second. Streadbeck then singled to right. The Sabers tried to throw her out at first, but the throw was wild, allowing Kealohi to score the go-ahead run. Sylva singled Streadbeck in from second and Alicia Pada followed with an RBI double to end the scoring.

Sylva set the Bulldogs down in order in the bottom of the 10th to pick up the complete-game win.

"When you're playing a team like Kaimuki, it's not over until that last out," Nagamine said. "They always have the ability to come back."
