Local soccer players
head to New Zealand

A group of veteran Hawaii soccer players leave tomorrow for the Supa Oldie World Soccer Championships at Dunedin, New Zealand.

The local players, competing under the banner of Aloha United in the 45 and over division, include Vic Peters, Kevin Smith, Peter Gaskell, Norman Berg, Frank Lee, Tim Owens, Wendell Staszkow, Manny Fernandes, Bruce Schlieman, Oren Schlieman, Ken Bogowitz, Jim Mitten and Wang Jun Suh.

Lee, 68, may be the oldest player in the tournament.

Hawaii's Lydia Alverez, Robyn Calhoun and Vicki Owens are making the trip to join a New Zealand women's team for the tournament. Also going is Sherri Ward, who hopes to referee and lay the groundwork for the tournament to be held in Hawaii in the near future.

Islanders arena team lands another QB

The Hawaiian Islanders signed arena football veteran quarterback Ed Moore.

Moore, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound Punahou alumnus, helped the Austin (Texas) Rattlers to the National Arena Football League title in 2000.

In 2001, he spent some time with the Columbus (Ohio) Wardogs of arenafootball2 --the league the Islanders have joined --before returning to the Rattlers.

Moore gives the Islanders two quarterbacks. Darnell Arceneaux, a St. Louis School graduate who played for Utah in college, is also on the team.

Sonoma State takes 2 from Hawaii-Hilo

Sonoma State held Hawaii-Hilo scoreless in sweeping a doubleheader yesterday at Wong Stadium.

Sonoma State won the first game 2-0 and took the second game 10-0.

Ryan Souza's fifth-inning RBI double was all the Cossacks needed in the opener.

In the second game, Sonoma State's (4-0) Gil Barry hit the first pitch of the game over the fence to start a 10-run spurt in the first two innings.

Hilo's (0-4) Scott McLaughlin went 3-for-3 with a double in the opener.

Vulcans starter Zeb Watts held the Cossacks to one hit and no runs over four innings.

In a season-opening doubleheader on Tuesday, Sonoma State won 5-3 and 4-3.
