Loretta Swit joins dialogue
in ‘Vagina Monologues’

Star-Bulletin staff

Loretta Swit will be joining the cast of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" for the second week of the production's Honolulu run at the Hawaii Theatre.

Mackenzie Phillips, who starred in George Lucas' film "American Graffiti" and played Julie Cooper on the CBS series "One Day at a Time," will be in the show Tuesday through Jan. 27 along with Amy J. Carle and Michele Shay.

Swit, who played Maj. Margaret Houlihan on TV's "M*A*S*H" for several years, will take Phillips' place Jan. 29 to Feb. 3.

"The Vagina Monologues" marks a return to the Hawaii stage scene for Swit, who performed "Shirley Valentine" here a few years ago.

In addition to taking on numerous TV and film roles, Swit has appeared on Broadway in "Same Time, Next Year" and "The Mystery of Edwin Drood," and across the country in "Any Wednesday," "The Odd Couple," "Mame," "Shirley Valentine" and "Love Letters." She has performed in "The Vagina Monologues" in New York, Chicago and London.

Based on interviews with a diverse group of women, the "Monologues" -- with titles such as "The Flood," "My Angry Vagina" and "If Your Vagina Got Dressed, What Would It Wear?" -- explore the humor, pain, wisdom and mystery hidden in this part of the female anatomy. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays to Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays, 5 and 8 p.m. Saturdays, and 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays through Feb. 3.

Tickets are $20 to $45, with a $3 discount for Hawaii Theatre members, students, seniors and military (10 percent group discounts for 12 or more, except Saturdays, are available by calling 732-7733).

There will also be a benefit for the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline on Jan. 29. The $100-per-person ticket includes a pre-show party in Compadres Bar & Grill in Ward Centre, trolley transportation, the production at the Hawaii Theatre and a post-production meet-the-cast party at Compadres. For reservations, call the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse at 534-0040. A contribution from the sales of "The Vagina Monologues" from the entire Honolulu run also goes to the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse.

For more information, call 528-0506 or 526-4400.
