Party up and
help out UH dancers

FORGET about writing a donation check or attending a football game to show your support for the University of Hawaii. This weekend, why not party for the benefit of some needy college students?

If you've ever gone to a UH sporting event or just watched one on television, then chances are good you've seen them perform. The UH Rainbow Dancers will be partying the night away Saturday at World Cafe. Buy a pre-sale ticket ($3 over 21, $10 under 21), and your money will help support the Rainbow Dancer Program. Call 956-7657.

And Sunday night brings KTUH to Wave Waikiki for a rare glimpse of what happens on the other side of your radio speakers. DJs G-Spot, Kavet the Catalyst, Loriel, Big Bar and others will bring all the music you're used to hearing on the college radio station live and direct to the Wave's dance floor. It's an 18-and-over fund-raiser with doors opening at 9 p.m. Call KTUH at 956-7261 for more details.

Happy birthday to you

NO WONDER Xtreme Radio @ 104.3 midday personality Hawaiian Ryan got Monday off. After his 30th-birthday party the night before at Brew Moon, Ryan probably needed the day to recover. Fellow Xtreme jocks Island Boy and K.C. were on hand to celebrate, as were Angela Perez Baraquio, Sam the Man and the guys from Chant, Reign and Dis Guyz. Cecilio Rodrigues even showed up with a guitar and performed unplugged. Anyone else remember Hawaiian Ryan as part of the Three Local Boyz way back when? I used to rock that cassette in my Walkman and just crack up laughing ...

Concerts keep coming

FORMER Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros lead singer Perry Farrell takes the stage Saturday night at the Wave in support of his solo album "Song Yet to Be Sung."

Farrell, performing this weekend as DJ Peretz, describes the new album on his Web site as "a world party plan that includes your most gorgeous soundscape vibrations on planet Earth, one that would bring inspiration to the global dance culture." Sounds like fun.

Local turntable wizards Daniel J and KSM will take turns keeping the crowd bumping along with Quadraphonix and New York City's DJ Alika. Tickets are $15 at the door for those 18 and older. Call 941-0424 for info.

All smiles at Grumpy's

ALTHOUGH the place has been open since mid-December, Grumpy's Bar and Grill makes its grand entrance onto the Honolulu party scene with events scheduled for this weekend.

Formerly known as the Blue Room, Grumpy's underwent significant renovations before reopening Dec. 9. Business partners Francis "Grumpy" and Valerie Borges along with general manager Antonio Rocha worked hard to "totally change the atmosphere," according to Valerie. Parking hassles are a thing of the past as well; CompUSA's parking lot across the street is available for use after the store closes.

With hip-hop on Friday and DJ Mercury's "'80s revival set" on Saturday, Grumpy's provides a decent alternative to the usual suspects in the area. Sunday night features a live performance by John Cruz from 6 to 10 p.m.

Out and about

I'm kind of ashamed to admit it, but I still haven't been to Dave and Buster's. Blame it on the crowds, I guess. The rooftop bar will get me in there one of these days soon, though, and tomorrow night just might be the night. There's no cover, and local bands Epic Session and Thick Tubes play from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

>> During the past few weeks, I've told you about opportunities to try out for the J-pop girl band Coconut Musume and be part of an upcoming Bruce Willis movie. This week, you can try out to become a professional football cheerleader -- in the AFL2!

The Hawaiian Islanders, an Arena Football League 2 team starting up in Honolulu, are looking for spirited individuals who want to be part of the team's inaugural season. Get down to Pipeline Cafe by 9 p.m. Sunday night to participate. Oh, and there's a little party planned, too. Natural Vibes and Ten Feet headline the "Hapuna Surf Party" with DJ Galmiche on the wheels all night.

>> Next Wednesday marks Natalie Merchant's return to Oahu for a repeat performance at the Sheraton-Waikiki Hotel (she played two nights there in 1998).

The former 10,000 Maniacs lead singer will also travel to Kauai and Maui for concerts Jan. 25 and 26. Tickets for the Wednesday concert are $37.50. Call 526-4400.

That's what's "In the Mix" for this week. Get at me if there's something going on in your neighborhood.
