The Honolulu Fire Department rescued a 38-year-old man yesterday who spent the night on a Punaluu cliff after rescuing his family's puppy. Hauula Fire Capt. Alan Carvalho said the man's children told him the 2-month-old puppy had been missing for a week or two. Their father spotted the puppy, whose name is Scrappy, on a cliff Saturday night and hiked up to get it. However, when he reached the puppy, it was dark, so he decided to spend the night, Carvalho said.

When he woke up in the morning, the man realized that he was in a precarious position and could not get back down the cliff, so "he just stayed put and waited for help," Carvalho said. People on the beach were able to see him waving for help. A call was placed to the Fire Department at 7:40 a.m., and within an hour the man and his puppy were airlifted off the cliff and delivered home.
