The PACE program, which provides home and community-based services for frail seniors, will hold a grand opening for a newly renovated Adult Day Health Center at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The facility, at the Maluhia Long Term Care Health Center in Alewa Heights, was expanded by about 1,115 square feet to serve 120 participants, said Audrey Suga-Nakagawa, PACE director.

She said the new facilities also will allow expanded group activities, dining and exercise programs.

The project was designed by the architectural firm of Maruyama, Kotake, Nunokawa & Associates Inc. and built by Allied Construction Inc. The total cost was $289,997.

PACE (the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) provides medical care, rehabilitation therapies, exercises, recreational activities and socialization for seniors in Honolulu, Aiea and Pearl City.

Respite is available for families and caregivers, who can leave loved ones in supervised care at PACE while at work or for relief from daily care-giving.

The program also serves East Honolulu residents from Leahi Hospital's Adult Day Health Center.

Hawaii's PACE program is sponsored by the Hawaii Health Systems Corp. and Maluhia.

Its mission is to keep older people as healthy and independent as possible so they can remain in their homes and avoid or delay the need for institutional care.
